Winner Takes All!

The early Cold War is marked as a time of intense fear and hysteria throughout the U.S. The vivid imagery depicted in this poster vibrantly expresses the competition between the United States and the Soviet Union as the Cold War raged into the 1960s. This political poster shows two athletes running a race with the finish line reading, “World Leadership.” Each hurdle represents a vital issue from the 1960 presidential campaign: education, economic growth and military strength. According to the poster, a vote for Kennedy meant a vote for strength and ultimately peace.

Library and Archives Sponsored Workshops

For the 2017-2018 school year, the Library and Archives education team has selected World War I as the topic for our teacher workshop series. Focusing on the analysis of primary sources in classroom instruction, this workshop will explore the various ways Tennesseans participated in the war and how the war's development impacted Tennesseans, both at home and abroad. Topics include reasons for American entry into the war, doughboy experiences, the homefront and new technology.

This workshop meets the curriculum standards for World War I found in the fifth grade, high school American history and high school World history curriculum.

Licensed, classroom teacher participants receive lunch and a $25 stipend to assist with mileage and travel expenses. Workshop locations and dates are in the sidebar to the right.

To register for a workshop, please visit our website. If you would like to register, please follow the link below the city/date you wish to attend. Several spots are still open at each of the seven remaining workshops across the state. Please contact Casey.Gymrek@tn.gov for questions.
