With the election results in, we have been planning for what lies ahead.
Dear Friends,
Bet Tzedek wishes you and your loved ones a Happy Thanksgiving next Thursday! November is Giving Season, a time during which we collectively focus on generosity, gratitude, and helping those in need. While celebrating the holidays with friends and family through the end of the year, we also look to the nonprofit organizations that are advancing justice and improving communities. At Bet Tzedek, we appreciate this season of generosity.
We help provide essential legal services that improve the lives of Los Angeles residents, particularly marginalized communities. With your help this past year, we’ve provided free legal aid and advocacy in four key areas: Senior Justice, Housing Justice, Family Justice, and Economic Justice. Whether we are helping nontraditional families access food, housing, and medical care, or we are fighting for fair wages and safe working conditions, the legal services Bet Tzedek provides have transformed lives across Los Angeles County and the state since 1974.
With the election results in, we have been planning for the reality of what lies ahead for our organization and for the individuals and families that we serve under the incoming administration. There is no uncertainty that our clients will face policy changes that will dramatically impact their well-being in the four years ahead of us. We will not lose sight of our responsibility to our clients and their families. No matter what these weeks, months, or years have in store, we will begin again, until we are back on that right road or, if need be, forge our own road toward a more just future.
Giving Tuesday, the single largest day for charitable donations worldwide, falls on December 3rd this year, two weeks from today. We hope you will consider making a donation this giving season to help us stand as a bulwark against attacks on our client communities.
Thank you to all generous donors and the incredible volunteers who make it possible for us to assist over 60,000 individuals and families every year. A hardworking member of our Bet Tzedek team, Hannah, has a message for you about why your gift matters.

Giving Back Does Good and Makes You Feel Good
Here are five reasons why donating to nonprofits and charities is beneficial to you, according to Charities Aid Foundation:
  • Giving to charity makes you feel good: empowered, happier, and fulfilled that you are supporting a cause you believe in.
  • It strengthens your personal values when you have a feeling of obligation to help those in need and are able to follow through.
  • There are ways to give that are more impactful than ever, with your dollar going farther. Donations are also tax deductible.
  • Giving can reintroduce friends and family to the importance of generosity. Family giving creates a bond, helping to bolster relationships through a shared goal and often raises more money.
  • Giving to charity builds and strengthens community. Giving to charity, and particularly locally, can be a powerful way to invest in the people and places that make up our everyday lives.

MEDIA ALERT: Our Class Action Lawsuit to Protect Catalina Island Workers Featured on CBS News
Members of Employment Rights Project team: Mary Tanagho Ross, Kelsey Chapple & Matt DeCarolis
Bet Tzedek's Employment Rights Project (ERP) along with co-counsel Capstone Law APC have filed a class action lawsuit on behalf of dozens of courageous workers on Catalina Island who were exploited and not paid for their labor. Instead, the business owners intimidated them and refused to abide by the law. Labor exploitation is rampant in Los Angeles and particularly impacts immigrants in our community.
We are committed to using all the tools we have to pursue justice for victims and hold individuals and businesses accountable. Several of our clients have also received immigration relief for reporting these violations, thanks to our partners at the Thai Community Development Center.
Great work to everyone on our team at Bet Tzedek and with whom we partner for fighting for workers' rights, and congrats on this CBS News feature!

MEDIA ALERT: Bet Tzedek Featured in CalMatters Article about Threat to Exploited Immigrant Workers with Temporary Legal Status
Bet Tzedek is featured in a CalMatters article about how a federal program that grants temporary legal status to exploited immigrant workers involved in certain labor investigations is on the chopping block with the Trump administration looming.
"Gamez’s attorney, Yvonne Medrano, said she’s expecting the program to be axed soon after Trump takes office Jan. 20. Her firm, the Los Angeles-based Bet Tzedek Legal Services, is no longer pursuing new cases under the program after representing workers seeking protections in 15 different workplace investigations.
'Removing this protection will return workers to a time when they fear deportation for asking for minimum wage, their paychecks, or any other protections they have,' Medrano said."
Bet Tzedek was on the cutting edge of protecting undocumented workers by helping them apply for deferred action. Now that's all up in the air. Deferred action for undocumented workers was a key tool in boosting enforcement of labor laws by helping workers brave enough to speak up about labor violations secure temporary protection from removal. Without such protections, some workers have to suffer inhumane working conditions while others are denied the wages they are owed for their hard work.
Consider donating to help us in our various efforts to support immigrant and low-wage worker populations, as this is more dire than ever with the shifting political tide. Thank you, Yvonne, for bringing awareness to this protection that is now under threat.
