Psalm 69:13-15
 But I pray to you, Lord,
    in the time of your favor;
in your great love, O God,
    answer me with your sure salvation.
Rescue me from the mire,
    do not let me sink;
deliver me from those who hate me,
    from the deep waters.
Do not let the floodwaters engulf me
    or the depths swallow me up
    or the pit close its mouth over me.

New International Version (NIV)
A friend told recently about one of her most frightening early memories.  She was a small child swimming in a play area at a lake.  The lifeguard told the children, if they found themselves in trouble to simply lift their hands.  Playing in the water, she was somehow pushed under and then perhaps stepped on.  Having lost her bearings she raised her hand upward.  Thankfully the lifeguards were watching and saw a little hand emerge from the water.  In seconds, she was rescued.  Because I swim like a rock, I understand her fear.  So did David!

David skips the pleasantries and simply shouts, “Help!”  Save me, O God for the waters have come up to my neck.  I sink in the miry depths where there is no foothold.  I have come into the deep waters; the floods engulf me.

Just as we are tempted to despair we discover what David did.  “But I pray to you, O Lord.”  David knows the one whom he addresses.  “In the time of your favor; in your great love answer me with your sure salvation.  Rescue me from the mire, do not let me sink; deliver me from those who hate me, from the deep waters.”  “Answer me out of the goodness of your love.”  I love that phrase.  Just how good is God’s love?  Very good!  Confident of God’s ability and willingness, he concludes with praise, “I will praise God’s name in song and glorify him with thanksgiving.”  God desires songs of praise even more than sacrifices of animals.  Our worship encourages others to worship:  “The poor will see and be glad . . .”  The heavens and earth praise him.  Even the seas and all that move in them worship our great God.  Do not hesitate to call upon him today!   And if you need help, just raise your hand.  Remember the words of the hymn, “He will save you, he will save you, he will save you now!”
Pray with me:
Father, we were sinking deep in sin far from the peaceful shore; very deeply stained within, sinking to rise no more.  Thank you Master of the sea for hearing our despairing cry, from the waters lifting us to safety.  Put a new song in our mouths, a song of praise to our God.  You alone have saved us, so we sing to you, giving thanks.  In Jesus’ name.  Amen.
