Matthew 13:51-52
“Have you understood all these things?” Jesus asked.“Yes,” they replied.
He said to them, “Therefore every teacher of the law who has become a disciple in the kingdom of heaven is like the owner of a house who brings out of his storeroom new treasures as well as old.”

New International Version (NIV)
Always I wish I had been there!  Imagine Jesus sitting down in the boat and talking about farmers planting seeds and mustard trees and treasures and pearls.  With parables he explained the kingdom of heaven to the people standing on the shore by the sea.

Jesus asked what every preacher wonders after a sermon on Sunday morning:  “Have you understood all these things?”  A mist in the pulpit is a fog in the pew.  We want to know what we are talking about so that we can make it clear.  We do not want the gift of making the simple things complex, but the opposite.

Wait.  What did he say?  Was Jesus inviting the teachers of the law to become disciples in the kingdom of heaven?  The New Testament is in the Old Testament contained and the Old Testament is in the New Testament explained.  This is why I preach from the Old Testament as well as the New Testament.    This whole year I hope to put the Old Testament in the clear light of the New.

To read the scriptures is to enter the treasure storeroom.  Inside are things old and new and we must bring them out into the light.  When Howard Carter, the great archaeologist stumbled on the tomb of King Tutankhamun, he called for light, shined it into the darkness and said, “I see wonderful things.”  So do we who open the treasure of scriptures in the illuminating power of the Holy Spirit.
Pray with me:
Father, open our eyes that we may see glimpses of truth you have for us.  Open our minds as we open your word today.  Teach us what you want us to know about our illustrious King Jesus and his kingdom which he brought to the earth.  In Jesus’ name.  Amen.
This year we focus our Every Day with Jesus readings on Jesus’ story.  With references to Tallowood's Read Through the Bible in 2018 daily reading plan, let's focus our undivided attention on Jesus and follow where he lead. He will not fail. Neither will we!

Joyfully,
