Hi Neighbor!
So I did something the other night that I haven’t done in years. I watched a commercial. On live television. (I’ll just let you digest that for a minute.) It was weird—and not an experience I want to repeat anytime soon. The backstory: My husband was watching a golf tournament on television, and I was flipping through a magazine. Suddenly he said, “Oh this commercial is hysterical. You have to watch it!” It was about these parents who were trying to lengthen their household chores to avoid calling their car insurance company. At one point the dad was up in a tree, frantically shaking the branches so he would have more leaves to rake. It was funny—in a folksy sort of way. But honestly, I couldn’t wait for it to end (all 30 seconds of it!).
Growing up, I remember commercials were a time to regroup and (gasp!) talk to my family about whatever show we were watching. Sometimes my sister and I would race to the kitchen, grab a snack and see who could make it back first before the commercial break ended. Now when a commercial comes on, I don’t want to talk or snack. I just want to make it stop.
I’m not sure commercials are going anywhere (two words: Super Bowl), but if they do disappear, I certainly won’t mourn their passing like some of the other things that technology has rendered obsolete (can I get a moment of silence for snail mail, paper maps, encyclopedias and mix tapes?). And in another year or two, I guess I’ll be due for another commercial—whether I like it or not. Hopefully I’ll have 30 seconds to spare.
Stay Tuned!

Cinema Classics Seminar: The French Connection
Thursday, August 18th
6:30 PM – 9:30 PM
Bryn Mawr Film Institute
824 Lancaster Avenue, Bryn Mawr
Forty-five years after its release to critical and popular acclaim, William Friedkin’s Oscar-winning masterpiece, The French Connection (1971), remains as bracing and influential as ever. While the film is usually remembered for its dangerously executed, spectacularly kinetic car chase under the elevated tracks of Brooklyn, it is also a case study in artfully sustained tension and the slow burn of the crime film genre at its best. Paul Wright, Ph.D., Department of English at Cabrini College, will lead the discussion.
Cinema Classics Seminars offer an entertaining and engaging way to learn more about some of the true classics of world cinema. Students receive an introductory lecture before the film and a guided discussion after the film. Ticket price includes popcorn and a drink. $25 for members, $30 for non-members.
