Maritime Administrator Rear Admiral Ann Phillips visits Texas A&M University at Galveston
Texas A&M University at Galveston welcomed Rear Admiral Ann Phillips, Administrator for the Department of Transportation Maritime Administration (MARAD) to campus on Tuesday, April 4, 2023. As the Maritime Administrator, Phillips is responsible for the country’s waterborne transportation operations. Part of MARAD’s mission is to develop the maritime industry of the United States to meet the nation’s economic and security needs; the education that Galveston campus students receive prepares them to do exactly that.
Every year, students from Texas A&M University at Galveston take part in The Big Event. This single-day event wholly dedicated to selfless service gives students the opportunity to give back to their community.

The American Waterways Operators (“AWO”) executive committee has approved the nomination of Kelly Teichman of T&T Marine as the organization’s next vice president of the board. She currently serves as the AWO Southern Region chair.
Galveston Campus Celebrates Two Record-Breaking Events
Whether you’re a prospective student stepping onto campus for the very first time or getting ready to walk across the stage at graduation, programs at Texas A&M University at Galveston are growing.
In March, the campus saw record-breaking attendance at two events with the Spring Career Fair and Aggieland Saturday by the Sea.
Over spring break, eight students from Texas A&M University at Galveston spent their time off cleaning up McKellar Lake in Memphis, Tennessee. Joined by other college students from across the nation, these Aggies participated in the Living Lands & Waters annual spring break cleanup. Over the organization’s 25-year-history, students and volunteers have removed nearly 13 million pounds of trash from our environment.
According to Dr. Christopher Marshall, marine biology professor and director of Gulf Center for Sea Turtle Research, four of the sea turtles were found on Cape Cod and were later flown to Texas A&M Galveston for a full rehabilitation. One sea turtle was found in Texas following the Christmas freeze last year.
Texas A&M University and The Association of Former Students have selected 25 outstanding faculty and staff to be honored with the 2023 university-level Distinguished Achievement Awards. Since 1955, the Distinguished Achievement Awards have been granted to those who exhibit the highest standards of excellence at Texas A&M.
Dubbed the “seaweed blob,” a nearly 5,000-mile-wide patch of seaweed — specifically, the brown algae Sargassum — is heading toward Florida and Caribbean beaches. Texas A&M Today spoke with Dr. Anna Armitage, professor of marine biology at Texas A&M University at Galveston, to learn more.
Bolivar Peninsula is a popular spot for beachcombers and this time of year you might also see sea turtles or their nests. Volunteers on the lookout for the tiny endangered turtles Tuesday spotted something much bigger: an alligator on the shore near the water!
