Acts 7: 1-4
Then the high priest asked Stephen, “Are these charges true?” 2 To this he replied: “Brothers and fathers, listen to me! The God of glory appeared to our father Abraham while he was still in Mesopotamia, before he lived in Harran. 3 ‘Leave your country and your people,’ God said, ‘and go to the land I will show you.’ 4 “So he left the land of the Chaldeans and settled in Harran. After the death of his father, God sent him to this land where you are now living."

New International Version (NIV)
If we were put on trial for being followers of Jesus, would there be enough evidence to convict us? When the Sanhedrin put Stephen on trial, the high priest interrogated him, by asking if the false charges made against him were true. His opponents accused him of saying that Jesus would destroy the temple.

Stephen began his speech by telling the story of Abraham’s obedience to God’s call in his life. Remember Abraham was told to leave his country and go to the land God would show him. Like the priests described in 6:15, Abraham became obedient to the faith.

Authentic faith results in obedience. To call Jesus, “Lord” means that we will do what he says. Jesus took false followers to task when he asked, “Why do you call me Lord, Lord, and do not do what I say” (Luke 6:46). Abraham’s faith resulted in obedience. So must ours.

Pray with me:
Father, let our actions today confirm the reality of our faith. We call Jesus Lord. Let us obey his call today. Help us to follow Jesus in faith today, trusting that you will sustain us wherever you lead us. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
Our Monday through Friday devotionals will start in the book of Acts this year.  We will not hurry through the book.  We want to see what the Holy Spirit did in the early church so that we may discern what he is doing in us and through us.  Join us for these devotionals as we learn together about our King and his Kingdom in the world.

We also invite you to join us as we read through the Bible. Copies of the reading plan are available at Tallowood Baptist Church, or download your copy here:
