1 Corinthians 13:9-12

For we know in part and we prophesy in part, but when completeness comes, what is in part disappears. When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put the ways of childhood behind me. For now we see only a reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known.

Do you ever wonder about heaven? The most common question I am asked is, “Will we still know each other in heaven?” I suppose people ask because we can’t imagine heaven being heaven if we won’t know our loved ones. What do you think? Will we know each other?

In one of the most famous chapters in the scriptures, Paul wrote about how faith, hope and love remain. Just as a child progresses in knowledge, so our knowledge will be made perfect in the presence of God.

Our best understanding here is limited like a dim reflection in a mirror. But someday we will see face to face. Now we have partial knowledge, but one day our knowledge will be complete. How well will we know? Fully, like we are fully known.

God knows us perfectly. In his presence we will know the same way he knows us. This is good news! We forget many things in this life. Because of disease and injury, we may even forget the people we love the most. Knowledge here grows dim. But in heaven everything we ever knew will be restored and more. Will we know each other? Yes. Better than ever before.

Father, you have searched us and you know us. Nothing in our lives is ever hidden from you. Lord we want to know you. Thank you for the hope that we will someday see you face to face and that we will know each other even as we are known. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
