1 Samuel 27:1
But David thought to himself, “One of these days I will be destroyed by the hand of Saul. The best thing I can do is to escape to the land of the Philistines. Then Saul will give up searching for me anywhere in Israel, and I will slip out of his hand.”
New International Version (NIV)
What makes you want to run and hide?  Remember the television series and the movie The Fugitive.  In the movie, the character played by Harrison Ford was a doctor accused of murdering his wife.  Tommy Lee Jones was the agent who was chasing him.  The word fugitive comes from the root word pheugo, which means to flee.  Incidentally, the same word gives us our word refugee and refuge.

David lived life on the lamb.  He was always running from King Saul.  So he spent a lot of time in caves.  Saul was so relentless that David went to work for the Philistines.  Yes.  Those Philistines.  Defeating their champion Goliath gave him credibility with them.   Extreme times call for extreme measures.  The hardest part may have been convincing the Philistines he was helping them when he wasn’t.

Where does a fugitive find refuge?  David’s psalms say that he found his ultimate refuge in God.   “God you are my refuge and strength, my very present help in times of trouble."  Better than a cave or a castle is our Commander in Chief, the God of Angel Armies.  He is our only sure guarantee of safety.  By all means, run to him.
Pray with me:
God our Refuge, we run to you today and every day.  We do not trust in our own resources.  Our best plans will not keep us safe from the things which pursue us.  So we trust you today.  You, O Lord are our refuge.  We run to the shadow of your wings.  Hide us and keep us safe from all that would harm us today.  In Jesus’ name.  Amen.
This year our Every Day with Jesus readings will follow The Bible Project Read Scripture Plan.  Copies of this reading plan are available at Tallowood Baptist Church, or download
the app at readscripture.org.  Read through the Bible with us in 2019!
Joyfully,
