Luke 6:6-10
6 On another Sabbath he went into the synagogue and was teaching, and a man was there whose right hand was shriveled. 7 The Pharisees and the teachers of the law were looking for a reason to accuse Jesus, so they watched him closely to see if he would heal on the Sabbath. 8 But Jesus knew what they were thinking and said to the man with the shriveled hand, “Get up and stand in front of everyone.” So he got up and stood there.
9 Then Jesus said to them, “I ask you, which is lawful on the Sabbath: to do good or to do evil, to save life or to destroy it?”  10 He looked around at them all, and then said to the man, “Stretch out your hand.” He did so, and his hand was completely restored. 11 But the Pharisees and the teachers of the law were furious and began to discuss with one another what they might do to Jesus.

New International Version (NIV)
Look out!  Legalism is always lurking.  Beware of the “gotcha” crowd.  As soon as we see a rule, we may keep it, resent it, and seek to enforce it on others.  Don’t get me wrong.  Rules are helpful.  But when they make us angry at others, we have missed the point.
Consider the Sabbath.  God instituted it from the start.  For six days shall you labor.  The seventh is a day of rest.  One pastor who took a regular day off was chastised by a friend, “The devil never takes a day off.”  Thinking quickly, the pastor said, “I know and if I don’t, I will be just like him.”
The Pharisees were trying to trap Jesus.  They noticed he snacked as he walked through the fields.  “Sabbath-breaker!” they shouted.  They watched closely to see if Jesus would heal a man on the Sabbath.  Jesus stood him up in front of everybody and asked, “Is the Sabbath a good day to do good?”  When they had no answer, Jesus healed the man.
Certainly, keep the moral laws of the Old Testament.  But do not get caught up in the dietary and calendar restrictions.  The early church released Gentile believers from these in the Jerusalem council (Acts 15:28-29).  Above all, avoid the “gotcha” mentality of the Pharisees.  Jesus is Lord of the Sabbath.  The Sabbath was made for people, not people for the Sabbath.  Every day is a good day to do good.  Today, for example!  Do good.
Pray with me:
Father, open our eyes to see beyond rules to right relationships with you and each other.  Help us to do all the good we can for all the people we can as long as we can.  Lead us not into temptation, and deliver us from becoming “gotcha” people, always trying to condemn others.  Thank you that there is now therefore no condemnation for us who are in Christ Jesus.  In his name, we pray.  Amen.
Our 2023 Every Day with Jesus readings are taken from Robert Murray M'Cheyne's Bible Reading Calendar. Copies of the reading plan are available at Tallowood Baptist Church, or download your copy here:
Please join us in reading through the scriptures again this year.  We will read the New Testament twice and the Old Testament once this year. M'Cheyne once said, “A man is who he is on his knees, and nothing more.”  Would you pray with me that God will make his word live to us this year?  Let’s not just get through the Bible.  Let it get through to us!

Joyfully,
Duane
