#4: Packing Tips

We hope your preparations for coming to NYU are going well. This message is the fourth of an email series for new international students (catch up on previous emails if you missed any).These emails contain very important immigration information and resources to help you acclimate to NYU and to the US.

Here we’ve compiled basic packing tips so you can be prepared for living in New York City.

Wondering what to bring with you and what to leave at home?

New York has a four-season climate, which consists of a hot and humid summer, a cool and dry autumn (fall), a cold and harsh winter, and finally, a warm and wet spring. This ever-changing weather requires thoughtful packing and preparation. Before you zip up your luggage, check out our suggested packing list or watch our video below for helpful tips from current NYU students.

Don’t own some of these suggested items?

Don’t worry! New York has an incredible selection of department stores, pharmacies, and grocery stores for you to make any additional purchases. So there is no need to pack big bottles of shampoo and soap, food and snacks, or anything you can buy in the city.

Safety in the City for International Students

Whether you are a new student or a student returning from semesters abroad, you may be thinking about how to stay safe when you arrive in New York City. Join us for a presentation from NYU's Campus Safety to learn safety tips on the subway, other NYU transportation options, and NYU resources to keep you safe. This presentation will also cover common online scams and how to avoid them.

Have any questions or concerns?

Check out NYU International Students, a Facebook community group where you can talk with other students before even coming to the US. You can use the group to ask questions about immigration or life at NYU and in NYC. You can also share resources, internships, and events, or buy and sell potentially useful items, such as textbooks and furniture.

Before you arrive, be sure to like us on Facebook and follow us on Instagram to stay updated on international students affairs. Talk to fellow international students on our community Facebook group.
