This week, Mayor Finch celebrated the one-year anniversary of Bridgeport, Conn. becoming home to North America’s largest fuel cell, which produces enough clean energy to power up to 15,000 homes.
In a recent U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) report titled, “State of the States: Fuel Cells in America 2014,” Bridgeport is highlighted as a leader in using the virtually pollutant free energy source to power thousands of homes. The report also notes that Connecticut is one of the top five fuel cell states in the country.
The fuel cell park, owned by Dominion (NYSE:D), consists of five Direct FuelCell® (DFC®) power plants, which are manufactured and installed by FuelCell Energy. The heat from the five power plants is recovered and converted into additional electricity, increasing the efficiency of the installation, and producing virtually pollutant free energy.
In response to this milestone, Mayor Bill Finch noted that the fuel cell is the cornerstone of the city’s green efforts.
“In Bridgeport, we’re investing in clean energy production, which is resulting in job creation and our children breathing cleaner air. The Dominion fuel cell park is the cornerstone of this effort. It produces enough clean energy to power up to 15,000 homes. It’s helping put Bridgeport on the map nationwide as a leader in fuel cell energy production. And, most importantly, it’s making our city a better place to live, work, and raise a family.”
