January 2016
Dear Charter School Supporter,
Welcome to 2016 and Happy New Year!
We're excited to kick off the year with a number of events to support charters and choice, from parent roundtables in celebration of National School Choice Week to our Bottom Line Basic Training featuring charter finance expert Raj Thakkar on January 21-22. As we head into this year's legislative session, it's critical that we in the charter school community come together to show the strength and reach of charter schools -- so please join us for these events!
Two more pieces of news I wanted to share with you: first, congratulations to our Legal & Policy Director Sarah Vandergriff for being honored by Louisiana Appleseed with their Good Apple Award! Sarah is being recognized for strengthening schools through her collaborative work on the legal handbook for charter school board members and educating board members about laws governing charter schools. She'll be honored on January 21 at the Good Apple Gala in New Orleans.
Second, you may have heard already that our Governance Initiatives Director, Makiyah Moody, will be leaving New Orleans to return home to New Hampshire. During her time with LAPCS, Makiyah has been an incredible champion and resource for charter board members across the state, especially through her work in building The Top Shelf program from scratch. Her departure is a loss for LAPCS and for the state, and we will miss her dearly. I hope you'll join me in wishing Makiyah well on her new adventure, and thanking her for all of her work and dedication to the charter movement.
Please note that we're committed to continuing the work of The Top Shelf moving forward; please contact Toryah Cameron if you or your charter board has any needs.
Sincerely,
Caroline Roemer
Executive Director, LAPCS
