The time to file the 2018-19 FAFSA is now!

Students planning to enroll at any time during the 2018-19 academic year (summer 2018, fall 2018 and/or spring 2019), should file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) as soon as possible. Students will be using their 2016 income and tax information (and their parents’, if applicable).
To complete the FAFSA, start at fafsa.gov.

Important notes:
  • UA's priority FAFSA deadline is Dec. 1. File your FAFSA by this date to be considered for the greatest range of need-based financial aid programs.
  • Use your already-filed 2016 income tax information.
  • Completing your FAFSA earlier gives you more time to prepare for the 2017-18 academic year.
ZipAssist in the Simmons Hall lobby is hosting a series of FAFSA Fridays in November for UA students who wish to complete a FAFSA on-campus. They can stop by the Simmons Hall lobby between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. on the following dates to receive assistance from ZipAssist staff and financial aid experts:
  • Nov. 3
  • Nov. 10
  • Nov. 17
Free food will be provided each week during the FAFSA Friday program. Parents are welcome to join their Zip on campus for assistance with filing!

Spring 2018 Class Registration

Priority registration appointments have been assigned, and students can view their enrollment appointment by logging into My Akron and selecting "Student Services Center." They can find the assigned appointment time under "Enrollment Dates" on the right-hand side of the screen.
Students are encouraged to take advantage of priority registration for the best choice of classes. Tutorials are available on how to search the schedule and register for classes.
Questions regarding the spring 2018 schedule of classes and/or priority registration appointments may be directed to the Office of the University Registrar at registrar@uakron.edu.
Students who would like assistance with navigating My Akron and/or viewing their enrollment appointments should visit ZipAssist in the lobby of Simmons Hall.

Refer. Support. Retain.

ZipAssist is an on-campus student advocacy and support office, designed to ensure that students are successful and have the resources needed to maintain enrollment here at UA.
If your student is struggling academically, financially, or having a hard time connecting to campus, please let us know.
Students can submit a self-referral, or the campus community can refer a UA student at uakron.edu/referral.
Common referrals include:
  • Textbook assistance
  • Financial aid/tuition inquiries
  • Academic concerns
  • Emergency financial barriers
  • Personal/social connectedness
Contact us at uazipassist@uakron.edu or stop into Simmons Hall to arrange a meeting with our staff.

Free tutoring available in Bierce Library, Polsky Building for all students

Students have access to support for their classes through Tutoring Services, which offers on-campus tutoring in two locations as well as online.

On the ground floor of Bierce Library, students can find math tutors, obtain feedback on a writing assignment, or meet one-on-one with a tutor with expertise in introductory-level courses. In some introductory-level math and science classes, your student may have an embedded tutor, or learning assistant, assigned to the class. The learning assistant holds regular study and exam preparation sessions.

The Polsky Building also houses both a math lab and writing lab, and has a special center targeted specifically for reading and study skills. Polsky Tutoring also can provide help with basic computer skills, including Microsoft Office and Springboard. See hours of operation and complete scheduling/appointment details.

In addition, to supplement our campus face-to-face tutoring services, UA offers free online tutoring through eTutoring in writing, math, statistics, biology, anatomy and physiology, physics and chemistry. eTutoring provides trained faculty and student tutors through the Ohio eTutoring Collaborative and provides support that is especially helpful to students in online and distance-learning courses. Register online now.

Off-Campus Housing Fairs

Is your student looking to rent a house or apartment off-campus and need help making the transition? ZipAssist will host landlords and campus resources for two Housing Fairs on Thursday, Nov. 2, and Thursday, Nov. 9, both from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the main concourse of the Student Union.

The Housing Fair is designed to offer information about housing options as well as resources for students who wish to live off-campus. The fairs will provide the opportunity for students to meet more than 20 property owners, and representatives from various campus departments will be present to provide students with relevant information about living on- or off-campus.

For more information about ZipAssist – Off-Campus Living, please contact Adam Hemminger at uazipassist@uakron.edu.

Continuing President Wilson's stewardship of our University

President Matthew Wilson has been credited with reviving enrollment and fundraising, and strengthening relationships across the region. The Board of Trustees recently rewarded Wilson for his leadership by extending his contract five years, calling him the "right person at the right time to serve as UA's leader." See what Wilson has been doing, and read the letter to campus from Board Chair Roland H. Bauer about our 17th president.

Family Weekend

Thanks to the 1,300+ families and Zips who joined us Oct. 6-8, 2017, for Homecoming and Family Weekend! Photos from the weekend can be viewed on our Parents & Family Association Facebook page.
