Walter Biel and his family are so proud of their company, Recon Services, being named C&D Recycler of the Year at the C&D World conference earlier this year that they erected this sign on the side of the building. CDRA is equally proud to have members such as Recon.

Labor Force Issues in C&D Recycling
Like most market sectors, the recycling industry is facing issues with labor. Getting and retaining top talent is important everywhere, and it has gotten more competitive in recent years as the job market has tightened. In my discussions with all sectors of membership of the CDRA, I have been asked multiple times if I knew of someone who could fill a job slot at their companies. It seems everyone has the same problem. One answer is, of course, to keep good people when you have them. How to do that can be a challenge, as money isn’t everything.
The CDRA recognizes this challenge, and with guidance from its Convention Committee, we will have an expert speaker or two on improving your company’s labor situation as part of C&D World 2019, March 10-12 in Brooklyn, NY. The committee is made up of recyclers and vendors who are peers of all CDRA members, so they know what is important in our industry. They guide the development of the program for all C&D Worlds, which serve as the Annual Meeting of the CDRA.
Among the other topics C&D World will cover includes biochar, sustainable energy at C&D recycling plants, and avoiding fires at recycling plants. More information will be coming out on speakers and other topics to be covered at C&D World 2019, but in the meantime please set aside the dates of March 10-12, 2019, to attend the show.

Midyear Board Meeting
The CDRA Board of Directors will meet in Chicago, Aug. 26-27. Ordinarily, this is a one-day affair, but this time the board will spend a day planning the direction for the next five years of the organization. We recently completed our first ever five-year plan, completing all the tasks on it. The process really helps give the board and staff a “to do” list that will benefit all recyclers. As always, all members are invited to participate in the board meeting on the afternoon of Sunday, August 26. Please contact the CDRA at 866-758-4721; info@cdrecycling.org.
