BU Quantum Seminar: "From Quantum Curiosity to Quantum Utility: Roadmap to Real-World Impact" |
Today, September 25, 2026 | 3:00 PM - 5:00 PM | CDS 701 or attend via Zoom
How does a technology evolve from scientific curiosity to practical utility? This session explores IBM's vision for quantum computing, recent advances in quantum hardware and error correction, and the path toward large-scale, fault-tolerant quantum systems. Attendees will gain a practical understanding of the current state of the technology, the challenges that remain, and how quantum computing may transform scientific discovery and industry in the years ahead.
Today's speaker, Chris Wildgoose is an IBM Quantum Ambassador and technologist with more than 20 years of experience in artificial intelligence, data, and emerging technologies. His career has included leadership roles at IBM, Hewlett Packard, and Deloitte, as well as founding and growing AI and analytics startups.

"From Heatmaps to Structural and Counterfactual Explanations" — AIR Seminar with Fuxin Li, Professor, Oregon State University |
Tuesday, September 29, 2026 | 2:00 PM - 3:00 PM | CDS 1101
This talk will focus on our endeavors in the past few years on explaining deep networks on images, where we believe we have shed significant light into how they make decisions. Realizing that an important missing piece for explaining neural networks is a reliable heatmap visualization tool, we developed I-GOS and iGOS++ which optimize with integrated gradients to avoid local optima in heatmap generations and improve performance in high-resolution heatmaps. Especially, iGOS++ was able to discover that deep classifiers trained on COVID-19 X-ray images wrongly focus on the characters printed on the image and could produce erroneous solutions. This shows the utility of explanation in "debugging" deep classifiers which have also recently been extended into explaining when and how do the image part matter in multimodal vision-language models.

INTERESTED IN INTELLIGENT AUTONOMOUS SYSTEMS?
|
Participate in Boston's First Anti-drone Swarm Defense Hackathon |
Action Space is a hands-on physical AI hackathon taking place in Boston on October 24–25, bringing together a small group of robotics and AI builders to tackle multi-agent autonomy and Counter-Drone Swarm Systems. There will be more than $1,000 in prizes!
Over the weekend in October, participants will:
- Train autonomous policies in NVIDIA Isaac Lab
- Work with reinforcement learning and multi-agent autonomy
-
Deploy their policies onto physical quadrotors
Action Space is looking for students interested in robotics, ML, RL, computer vision, autonomy, or related fields. The event is free and open to everyone.

Join xFoundry and NASA's Nationwide Competition |
Open to all students, teams of two to five pick one of four focus areas and spend the semester finding and validating a problem worth solving in it:
- Predictive User Interfaces: smart interfaces that know what you need before you do
-
Human Performance Monitoring: health and safety tools that tell us when we are at risk
- Autonomous Asset Inspection: AI that warns before failure in infrastructure, systems and parts
-
Adaptive Learning: systems that learn, adapt and reconfigure in high-stress environments
Teams research and analyze the problem rather than build a product, then pitch what they find to industry leaders. Each team has to span at least two disciplines, drawn from technology, entrepreneurship, arts and athletics, marketing, and science, so this is not a competition only for engineers.
There is no cost to enter. Fall registration runs through November 27, submissions are due December 19, and finals are at the NEXPLORE Summit in April 2027.
Register at connexions.xfoundry.org. Full details at xfoundry.org/horizons-challenge.
