UAH expands psychiatric mental health education for nurses seeking to become nurse practitioners or add a certification |
UAH recently announced the addition of a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) concentration in the Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) degree and an PMHNP post-master’s certificate offering. Expected to launch in fall 2026, the master’s concentration is designed for nurses who want to become nurse practitioners, while the non-degree PMHNP certificate is designed for individuals who have already earned a MSN degree.
“This offering comes at a crucial time for our community,” said Dr. Karen Frith, dean of the UAH College of Nursing. “Alabama faces a critical shortage of mental health providers — the PMHNP track in the MSN and the certificate program will help fill that gap by training nurse practitioners in key areas, ultimately expanding access to care and improving the quality of life for individuals with mental health conditions and their families."

Researcher develops model to better understand the nature of hurricane landfalls, enhancing predictions and public safety |
Dr. Xiaomin Chen, an assistant professor of atmospherics and Earth science at UAH, has developed a new model capable of resolving turbulence and eddies within hurricanes as they transition from water to land and, for the first time, enabling researchers to quantify the uncertainty of 10-meter wind estimates above the surface. These estimates are crucial for classifying hurricanes.
“Obtaining wind measurements overland under hurricane conditions is risky and challenging,” said Chen. “Either the observational instruments or power infrastructure may fail in those extreme conditions. This study leverages a novel turbulence-resolving modeling framework to ‘generate’ these hard-to-obtain measurements in the coastal region.”

UAH Softball head coach Les Stuedeman announces retirement after 30 seasons, Melanie Carter rises to head coach |
After 30 seasons, UAH softball head coach Les Stuedeman announced her retirement earlier this month. Associate head coach Melanie Carter will take her place as head coach ahead of the 2025-26 academic year.
"If you find a job you love, you never work a day. I feel like that sums up my career at UAH," Stuedeman said. "There is no way to express the gratitude I feel for 30 years of getting to be a Charger. The women who have worn the UAH softball jersey have gifted me with a lifetime of memories and we built something special TOGETHER. It's been my honor to be their coach and to watch them flourish on the field and in their lives after Charger softball."
"We are so fortunate to have Melanie Carter as our new head coach," UAH Director of Athletics Dr. Cade Smith said. "She embodies what it means to be a UAH Charger. She has been here as a student-athlete, an assistant coach, an associate head coach, and I know she will work tirelessly to be an excellent head coach for us. I am so proud of her and can't wait to watch her get to work in her new role."

Maury Regional Medical Center donates to UAH College of Nursing to name training lab |
Maury Regional Medical Center in Columbia, Tennessee, has made a $145,000 commitment to the UAH College of Nursing to name the Basic to Advanced Lab in the Simulation Learning & Innovation Center (SLIC). The Maury Lab, previously known as the Bed Lab, is a 16-bed mock hospital that provides realistic clinical experiences for student nurses and community partners. The lab is the largest room in SLIC’s 10,615-square-foot state-of-the-art facility.
“This is an important day for Maury Regional and for UAH,” said Jeff Pierce, Maury Regional’s director of human resources. “We are purposeful in who we look to partner with because not all organizations are the same. It is our privilege and our honor to partner with The University of Alabama in Huntsville College of Nursing. The alignment that I see toward people, toward individuals, is really the foundation of our relationship.”
