Dear GW Business Community,
As we enter October, I would like to highlight some significant observances and forthcoming events this month that offer opportunities for reflection, education, and engagement.
Our diversity strengthens us, our openness to different perspectives makes us wiser, and our inclusivity of diverse heritages and backgrounds enriches our community. There are many ways we can raise awareness and contribute to conversations surrounding diversity, equity, and inclusive excellence, respect our differences, and learn from each other.
As October wraps up Hispanic Heritage Month (Sept. 15 - Oct. 15), celebrating the rich contributions of Hispanic and Latinx communities, this month also raises awareness and celebrates Indigenous American peoples reflecting on their enduring histories and vibrant cultures, highlights the history of LGBTQ+ community, and raises awareness on national disability employment awareness.

We will observe Indigenous Peoples' Day on October 14th, honoring the histories and cultures of Native American communities. As a segue to November (National Native American Heritage Month) and to commemorate Indigenous People’s day, we will have a seminar by Professor Robert Miller, Arizona State University, on Doctrine of Discovery, which is organized by the GWSB Dean’s Diversity Council, efforts led by Professor Arthur Wilson. Please join us for this insightful event.
Speaker: Professor Robert Miller, Arizona State University
Date and Location: October 25th 2:30pm Duques 251.
Topic: Doctrine of Discovery
The Doctrine of Discovery was an international legal principle used to justify colonization, asserting superiority over Indigenous peoples and lands. This talk explorers claimed ownership of the "discovered" territories, analyzes how this Doctrine is applied, and discusses its continuing impact on Indigenous societies today.

This month also marks LGBTQ+ History Month, a time to honor the progress made by the LGBTQ+ community. It's an opportunity to reflect on the journey toward equality and the ongoing challenges faced by LGBTQ+ individuals. GWSB community is active in LGBTQ+ awareness, and we celebrate their ongoing work in these important efforts.
To learn more about achievements of LGBTQ+ community, you can visit LGBTQ+ History Month website, which celebrates a unique LGBTQ+ icon each day of October and their accomplishments. You can also raise your awareness on the critical work done by the Trevor Project, which GWSB partners through events and where GWSB alumni are active, in supporting LGBTQ+ youth.

National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM)
|
In addition, October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM), a reminder of the importance of creating inclusive workplaces for people with disabilities. It is important to provide tools and resources for fostering inclusive employment practices and promoting workplace inclusion.

For GWSB faculty, Dean's Diversity Council and the Teaching Excellence Committee, led by the efforts of Professor Stuart Levy, arranged a workshop on Creating Classroom Belonging with Intention on October 28th 12pm. More details to follow. We hope to see our faculty members in this workshop.
Your commitment to helping us grow in our journey toward creating a more diverse, equitable, and inclusive space for everyone truly makes a difference. If you have any ideas or questions about how we can further advance our DEI efforts, feel free to reach out.
