Cowichan | Therapeutic Riding and Equine-Based Therapeutic Services
June 18: Join for 30 Years worth of Celebration!
On Saturday June 18th, 2016 the Cowichan Therapeutic Riding Association is hosting our big 30th anniversary party – and you’re invited! CTRA invites everyone to join us in celebrating 3 decades of providing therapeutic riding and equine-based services for persons with disabilities in the Cowichan region.
Since our modest start in 1986 as a local chapter of the Pacific Riding for the Disabled, CTRA has grown into an independent nationally-recognized program serving hundreds of individuals and families. The program is made possible through extensive community support including the efforts of hundreds of volunteers contributing thousands of hours each year.
CTRA welcomes the public in toasting the big 3-0 at the CTRA facility on Providence Farm. Come grab a hot dog and piece of birthday cake and walk the grounds, check out the new riding arena, and visit the horses.
The day’s entertainments will include a therapeutic riding demonstration as well as a showcase on CTRA’s latest program – equestrian vaulting.  Other activities will include a treasure hunt, a “toddlers to teens” themed silent auction, face-painting, and family-friendly games. Complimentary refreshments will be provided and don’t forget to cast your vote in the 5th Annual Chili-Cook-Off!
No RSVP required, invite everyone you know!

CTRA Riders Mount up for 2016 Video Competition
Veteran video competitor Ross Wristen (aboard "Ember") shows off his 2015 ribbon
The tack is gleaming, the horses are spotless, and our riders are dressed for success! CTRA is thrilled to once again take part in the Para-Equestrian Canada Video Competition Series

This series, hosted by the para-sport branch of Equine Canada, offers riders with special needs across Canada an opportunity to compete remotely via videotaped entries. This accessibility is crucial for riders that often depend on home-supports (specific volunteer and horse teams, adaptive equipment/lift assistance, etc.) in order to participate. The ability to record an entry at their home facility offers para-riders the opportunity to compete on a national level without the prohibitive logistics and expense of travel.

This year's video competition will include the Sea-to-Sea para-dressage program and the multi-discipline Coast-to-Coast program. Competition dates start this spring and continue into the fall. Good luck to all the entrants in the 2016 competition!
The 2016 Ride-a-Thon Enters the Final Stretch
Last year the Cowichan Therapeutic Riding Association raised over $15,000 in support of their program through our annual “Ride-a-Thon” fundraising event. This year, CTRA is hoping to meet and surpass that total, thanks to the support of our community.

The Ride-a-Thon event takes place over a week, with participants organized into groups around CTRA’s 14 therapy horses. These teams “race” to raise pledges, with the group raising the most money claiming victory in the steeplechase-themed event. While every participant will receive a prize for taking part, awards will be given out for the winning horse team and top individual pledge-earners. There will also be incentive prizes for participants raising money to pre-determined levels. The winners will be announced at this year’s special 30th Anniversary Celebration

It is not too late to throw your support behind a participant, your favorite therapy horse, or the event in general! You can donate online in support of an individual or horse team or contact our office to make a pledge directly. Or join our incredible group of sponsors and show the community how your business supports those in need.

Rider Spotlight: Meygan
Meygan came to CTRA in 2011 with a referral for Generalized Anxiety Disorder. Before starting at CTRA her father reports that Meygan was “failing in all aspects of social behaviour.” She struggled to make friends, demonstrated antisocial behaviours, and disliked school. Her family felt frustrated by their situation, explaining that “everything we had done up to this stage was a failure. Other parents treated us like outsiders.”

At first, Meygan was apprehensive and nervous around the horses, requiring a volunteer to lead.  For Meygan’s father, the positive transformation began when she “started to understand the common factor between her and the horse. Within no time, our daughter was smiling and actually enjoying riding her horse.” “If you met her now,” her Instructor Irene reports, “you couldn’t tell she has anxiety. She’s extremely outgoing; always asking questions and excited to try new things.”

Since starting with CTRA, Meygan’s life has changed dramatically. She has made many new friends and does very well in school. Her family is extremely grateful for the progress she has made. “Our daughter has changed,” explains her father. “She has friends now, which is huge. Her anxiety is very minimal and she is socially accepted everywhere she goes.”

“It is like there is a switch,” says Irene. “No matter what is happening in her outside life, she comes to the barn and nothing else matters. She is a whole new kid.”

On her favorite horse “Leo,” Meygan recently competed in her first Sea-to-Sea video competition. Meygan enjoyed the competition and is now eager to work on improving her scores. For Meygan’s family, the goal is simple. “She loves her horse and smiles every time she is there,” explains her father. “The most important thing is that it makes her happy.
It's A Draw: CTRA Honors 2 Volunteers of the Year for 2015!
Every year CTRA recognizes an outstanding volunteer with our Volunteer of the Year award. We are happy to report that this year we simply couldn’t choose between two incredible individuals and decided to recognize both with this distinction. CTRA was honored to present volunteers Doug Sanford and Sue Billings with Volunteer of the Year awards at our Annual General Meeting held in March. Read on to learn a little more about these dedicated volunteer superstars!
Doug Sanford

Doug Sanford has been volunteering with CTRA since 2014. A horseman for most of his life, Doug began volunteering because he loves working with horses. For Doug, his time at CTRA is about helping people and making connections in a great atmosphere. “I have made some good friends,” Doug says of his newfound relationships with participants and program personnel.

When pressed to choose a favorite horse from his circle of equine companions, Doug hedges his bets. “I like all the CTRA horses,” he explains with admirable diplomacy. When Doug is not at CTRA, he continues to enjoy the great outdoors as an avid golfer, hiker, and gardener.

We asked this veteran volunteer what piece of advice he would give to a new volunteer on their first day. “Love what you are doing,” he replied. “You will get more out of it than you give.”
Sue Billings

Sue Billings first learned of CTRA during the association’s early days when she loaned her horse Charlie to the program. Her involvement as a volunteer began in 2011 when Sue joined the team working on the dinner auction fundraising event. Sue’s computer skills soon proved invaluable as she transformed the organization’s database capacity over the coming years, dramatically improving daily operations and reporting capabilities.

Sue’s favorite aspect of volunteering is the people. She comments that she has “come to know many of the office, coaching, and barn staff who are so dedicated to the program.” Between her impressive travel adventures, Sue continues to assist administration on the databases and fills in as one of CTRA’s most skilled horse-handlers

An accomplished horsewoman, Sue brings her decades of experience to the program. “I expect them to be respectful of me and happy to do their job,” she says of the therapy horses. “At the moment I am in love with Lexie,” she admits. “I have owned a Fjord horse and know several breeders. She is a great athlete and seems happy.”

For first time volunteers, Sue has this advice: “Recognize that everyone appreciates what you have to offer. The CTRA riders have unique needs and you are part of a team that makes it all work. Listen and learn. You may find, as I have, that you will also benefit in many ways.”

We need your help!
Here are two ways you can take a few minutes out of your day and make a BIG difference for CTRA!

1) Get a Thrifty Foods Smile Card! You get the card from us (we can send it in the mail if you like!) and you pre-load an amount onto it. Then you use the card just like a debit card when you shop. You can use the card at any Thrifty Foods location and CTRA receives 5% of the amount you fill on the card (not what you spend).
2) Are you a volunteer or participant? Take our 2016 survey and help us gather important information about what we are doing right and how we can continue to improve our program! The survey is really short (only 10 questions) and should take you about 5 minutes.

Volunteer Survey
Participant Survey (to be filled out by participants, parents, caregivers, case-workers, etc.)
Don't forget to follow us on Facebook and Instagram! Our social media team is great at keeping a smile on your face and knowledge in your head. You will NOT be disappointed :-)
