Nahum 1:15
Look, there on the mountains,
    the feet of one who brings good news,
    who proclaims peace!
Celebrate your festivals, Judah,
    and fulfill your vows.
No more will the wicked invade you;
    they will be completely destroyed.

New International Version (NIV)
                 In my youth, I brought my Lutheran friends with me to a revival service at my little Baptist Church in Montana.  I had been to their services and benefited from their gentle spirit and deep reverence for the Lord’s Supper observance.  Now they would get to see my church.

                Not all revival preachers are the same!  Our preacher that week preached with an anger.  The words fire and brimstone come to mind.  I had seen this kind of preaching before.  My friends had not.  It gave us a good chance to talk about the power of grace – something Martin Luther loved a lot.

                Nahum was fiery.  He proclaimed judgment on sin.  And he was right.  As David Crowder sings, “He is jealous for me.  He loves like a hurricane and I am a tree, bending beneath the weight of his joy and mercy.”  The good news starts with our inability to save ourselves.  Thankfully it does not leave us there.  Nahum points out the beauty of feet of those who bring good news.  Paul quoted this in his message about salvation in Romans 10:15.

                Don’t we love good news?  When our kids came and told us they were expecting our first grandbaby, their feet were beautiful to us, even and especially at 10:30 on a Saturday night before I preached the next day.  Of course it was hard to go to sleep!

                We can tell people the truth in love, if we will.  The truth may initially bring pain, but it does not leave us there especially when spoken in love.  Those who call us to turn from sin and return to God have beautiful feet.  May your feet be beautiful today!
Pray with me:
Father, thank you for loving us jealously.  You are good.  You give refuge in trouble.  You care for those who trust you.  Let us share that good news with all who will listen today.  Let someone ask us the reason for our hope, today.  Make us ready to answer, with beautiful feet.  In Jesus’ name.  Amen.
This year our Every Day with Jesus readings will follow The Bible Project Read Scripture Plan.  Copies of this reading plan are available at Tallowood Baptist Church, or download
the app at readscripture.org.  Read through the Bible with us in 2019!
Joyfully,
