Acts 12: 11 - 17
11 Then Peter came to himself and said, “Now I know without a doubt that the Lord has sent his angel and rescued me from Herod’s clutches and from everything the Jewish people were hoping would happen.” 12 When this had dawned on him, he went to the house of Mary the mother of John, also called Mark, where many people had gathered and were praying. 13 Peter knocked at the outer entrance, and a servant named Rhoda came to answer the door. 14 When she recognized Peter’s voice, she was so overjoyed she ran back without opening it and exclaimed, “Peter is at the door!” 15 “You’re out of your mind,” they told her. When she kept insisting that it was so, they said, “It must be his angel.” 16 But Peter kept on knocking, and when they opened the door and saw him, they were astonished. 17 Peter motioned with his hand for them to be quiet and described how the Lord had brought him out of prison. “Tell James and the other brothers and sisters about this,” he said, and then he left for another place.

New International Version (NIV)
True confession:  I sometimes dream about preaching. I’m not sure why, but I do. It may be a variation of the “Test” dream where one forgets they had to take a test. I read about a pastor who dreamed he was preaching, woke up, and realized he actually was . . . preaching. If the Pastor fell asleep while he was preaching, no one could fault the congregation for falling asleep.

Peter still thought he was asleep as the angel led him to safety.  But when he realized it was really happening, he headed to the prayer meeting at the house of Mary and her son John Mark. This is not a fable. These stories reflect memories of actual events. A woman named Rhoda met him at the door and she was so excited that she forgot to let him in. “Peter is at the door.” The people who were praying could not imagine that God had answered their prayer. They began a conversation about what might really be happening. Meanwhile, Peter kept on knocking.

My son Chase tells a story he heard from Scott Young at a Spark weekend at Tallowood. Scott was on a mission trip pouring concrete for a church. Rain showers were forecast and entered the area. The rain would have ruined the work the team had done. They called an impromptu prayer meeting, and the rain went on either side, but did not touch the concrete. Scott was amazed and asked the leader about it. The leader agreed about what had happened and then asked, “Why are you surprised?”

Jesus taught in the Sermon on the Mount, “Ask and you will receive, seek and you will find, knock and the door will be opened to you.” Do we really expect God to answer our prayers? Are we ever surprised when he does? Let’s continue to ask, seek, and knock. Once we pray, let’s expect to receive, find, and walk through open doors.

Pray with me:
Father, awaken us from our doubt. Thank you for answering prayers for Peter and for us. Help us to pray expectantly today. Bring us boldly to your throne of grace so that we may receive all that we need from your gracious hand. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
Our Monday through Friday devotionals will start in the book of Acts this year.  We will not hurry through the book.  We want to see what the Holy Spirit did in the early church so that we may discern what he is doing in us and through us.  Join us for these devotionals as we learn together about our King and his Kingdom in the world.

We also invite you to join us as we read through the Bible. Copies of the reading plan are available at Tallowood Baptist Church, or download your copy here:
