Mark 4:39-41
He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, “Quiet! Be still!” Then the wind died down and it was completely calm.  He said to his disciples, “Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?”  They were terrified and asked each other, “Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him!”
New International Version (NIV)
Watching the news about Hurricane Dorian, I remembered that storms make me nervous.  Tornadoes struck near my churches in Mart and Austin when I served in those places.  Tropical storms and hurricanes have marked my years in Houston.  Either I bring bad luck when it comes to weather, or bad weather is just a part of living in the places where I have lived.  Near our church in Mart was a mobile home park which suffered great damage in a storm.  One man recounted his sink flying across the room over his head.  I remember our huge custom built dog house scooting across the yard and smashing into splinters against a fence.  Thankfully our Bassett Hound, Robbie was not in the dog house.  Many wrestle with post-traumatic stress over the rains of Harvey.  Sometimes storms seem inescapable.

Storms did not stop happening when Jesus came to the world.  Asleep in a boat in a storm, he was awakened by his frightened disciples.  He told the storm to “pipe down” and it did.  The disciples looked at each other and wondered, “Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?”  Great question.  We may quake at the sight of a storm and wonder who Jesus is.  We would do better to tremble at the awesome power of Jesus and wonder, “Who does the storm think it is in view of the God of the universe?"

What storm looms on your horizon today?  A song I love comes to mind, “Let go my soul and trust in Him.  The wind and waves still know his name.”  We remember the names of storms, but if storms could think, they would remember the name of the wind who can silence them with a word.  So often in prayer I show my storms to Jesus, as the disciples did.  What if in prayer we showed our Savior to the storms.  Who would win?  I know we know the answer.  Remember who Jesus is today.  It will help you when the wind starts to blow.
Pray with me:
Father, how we thank you for our omnipotent Savior.  Of course storms have to obey the Maker of the universe.  Lord, when we are afraid help us to trust in you and not be afraid.  We stand in awe of your victorious power.  Please broaden our understanding of who you are.  We ask you to protect life from the Hurricane called Dorian.  Turn it away from land.  Turn our eyes toward yourself today we pray.  In Jesus’ name.  Amen.
This year our Every Day with Jesus readings will follow The Bible Project Read Scripture Plan.  Copies of this reading plan are available at Tallowood Baptist Church, or download
