Luke 12:32-34
“Do not be afraid, little flock, for your Father has been pleased to give you the kingdom.  Sell your possessions and give to the poor. Provide purses for yourselves that will not wear out, a treasure in heaven that will never fail, where no thief comes near and no moth destroys.  For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also."
New International Version (NIV)
What would you do if someone gave you a Kingdom?  In 2006, Sarah Culberson, a young American woman discovered her birth father was chief of the Bumpe tribe in Sierra Leone, Africa.  This made her a princess.  "They were amazing," Culberson said, remembering her first impression of the Bumpe. "There are about 200 [people] to 300 people there to welcome you in the ceremony, singing, dancing, and I was like, 'What did I do to deserve this?'"  When she realized the suffering of her people, this young lady who grew up in West Virginia started the Kposowa Foundation to help them.  She explained, "The title princess means responsibility."

The King of Heaven came to earth and conferred the Kingdom on his followers, whom he called "little flock."  Jesus gave them a kingdom and then told them to sell their own possessions and give to the poor so that they could store up treasure in heaven.  If someone gives us a Kingdom, far from making us more possessive, we become more generous.  Our Kingdom can never be taken away.  So we set our hearts on things above and find our treasure not in the temporary but in the eternal.

Pray with me:
King Jesus, thank you for giving us your Kingdom.  Help us to live as citizens of heaven today, finding ways to use our temporary resources to accomplish eternal good.  In Jesus’ name.  Amen.
