At the turn of the 20th century, enterprising businessmen created Lake Toxaway and built an extraordinary resort on its shores. From 1903 to 1916, some of America’s most distinguished citizens signed the Toxaway Inn’s guestbook (Harvey Firestone, Henry Ford, George Vanderbilt, among them) and established the surrounding area as an enduring mountain getaway.
The Toxaway Inn may be gone (find out more about the Inn’s fascinating history
here), but the wonders that drew visitors here over a hundred years ago still remain, along with a host of new reasons to visit.
Let’s drive west on US64 and see what we can discover, shall we?
We recommend making the headwaters of the French Broad River your first stop. The folks at
Headwaters Outfitters can get you on the 3rd oldest river in the world in no time. Afterwards, enjoy a refreshing beverage at their Forks of the River Taproom.
If your idea of outdoor adventure doesn’t include a paddle, head straight to
Gorges State Park, considered by many to be the crown jewel of North Carolina’s state park system. Here you’ll find a natural playground of over 7,500 acres, including numerous waterfalls, abundant hiking trails and a truly world-class Visitor Center.
For further exploration of the region’s rare and diverse flora and fauna, wind your way up to
Southern Highlands Reserve, perched in a heavenly location at the edge of the Blue Ridge Escarpment. The Reserve is a celebrated native plant arboretum dedicated to sustaining the remarkable natural ecosystems of the Southern Appalachians.
Looking for a sweet diversion? Visitors who’ve stopped by
Killer Bees Honey are totally buzzed about the tours and tastings this fine apiary offers.
All of this exploring is sure to work up an appetite. Fortunately, we’ve got some appetizing options for you, including
The Blind Mule at Toxaway Station,
Lakeside Dining Room, Osteria Del Monte,
The Falls Café, and
Villa Amato.
The Toxaway area also serves as an ideal base camp for extended mountain vacations. Fall into the lap of luxury at the historic
Greystone Inn, located on the shores of Lake Toxaway. You can also opt for more rustic, but oh-so-comfortable lodgings, at the
Brook Trout Inn and
Black Bear Lodge. For those interested in experiencing a health and fitness retreat,
Skyterra might be just what you’re looking for.
But whether you stay for a day or a week, we think you’ll find Historic Toxaway to be one of the most captivating destinations in the mountains of western North Carolina – and to think, it’s all right here in our own backyard.
