This week was very exciting for all of us! We are so happy to see campus "almost" back to normal. Congratulations on making it through your first week of classes for Fall 2021. Keep up the good vibes, check out the involvement, and don't forget to use your planner!
-L@s GANAS Staff

Congratulations Veronica!

Veronica has accepted a position in the Chancellor’s Office as Director of Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI) Initiatives. She will be part-time with L@s GANAS and the Chancellor’s office until November 22nd, after which Veronica will be full-time with this exciting new position.  As Director of HSI Initiatives, she will work with the Chancellor to coordinate national efforts among other Research Intensive HSI schools to increase the number of Latinx students earning degrees, from undergraduate to PhDs. She will also work with the Chancellor to strengthen UIC’s efforts to serve our Latinx community.  The success of the L@s GANAS program and the achievements of our students caught the Chancellor's eye and made Veronica a clear choice to fill this new, overarching position in HSI initiatives.
Please join us in congratulating Veronica by sending her well wishes through this virtual card.
Taking inspiration from @latinasociologist, we asked our Mentoring Con GANAS Mentors to share Consejos (advice) for our new students.
What is something you wish you knew on the first day of school?
This is what they have to say:
"On the first day of school, I wish I knew that not many students utilize office hours and that I shouldn’t wait until I’m stuck to ask for help. Going to clear up confusion, talk through concepts, or sharing goals with faculty is not something to be intimidated about. They are here for you so go ask away!!"
. -Ruth Covarrubias, McG Mentor
"Everyone is just as lost as you trying to find classes. UIC is too big to say that people have been in every building on campus." -Yoselin Porcayo, McG Mentor
"I wish I knew that it is okay to feel lost because it is a new environment, and to actually study because it's not like high school." -Gisselle Medina, McG Mentor
"Something I wish I knew going into the first day of school is that when it comes to course material its important to take note of what is provided in the syllabus and stated by your instructors, so that you can schedule your time accordingly and to help ensure you have time for personal, career-based endeavors and generally things outside of one's academic life." -McG Mentor

Mentors Recommend:
MAPS (Minority Association of Pre-Medical Students) because it’s a tight-knit supportive community with many resources! They put on a whole week of events called Minorities in Academia Week in collaboration w/ 20+ orgs, provide CPR certification, and do tons of giveaways! I may also be the VP but check out our insta @maps_uic and see it for yourself! We would love for you to join the MAPS family! -Ruth Covarrubias
Check out WISE (Women In Science and Engineering) Med. It's a great organization for offering support a common ground space for women to speak up about the issue they are currently facing in their majors or in current experiences. They also bring in female role models already in the field to come to talk with the members and address some of their concerns. great opportunity to network! -McG Mentor
The Wellness Center! Especially in these hard times, it is hard to afford food. Nobody should go hungry trying to pay for college. Check out the Pop-Up Pantry. -McG Mentor
