WINTERFOLK XXVII: HEADLINED BY BRYAN BOWERS
A Celebration of Music, Community and Service
January 31st, 2015 at the Aladdin Theater, 7PM
A benefit for Sisters Of The Road

Portland, OR (Dec. 5, 2014): The 27th annual Winterfolk folk festival returns January 31st, with headliner Bryan Bowers. Since its inception, Winterfolk has generously benefitted Sisters Of The Road’s (sistersoftheroad.org) nonprofit Cafe and organizing work for people experiencing homelessness and poverty. Tickets are $30 in advance or $32 at the door, and are now on sale at the Aladdin Theater box office, website (www.aladdin-theater.com) and Music Millennium (E. Burnside & 32nd Ave.).

In a career spanning more than four decades, Bryan Bowers has recorded numerous albums, and his name has become synonymous with the autoharp. He is also an exceptional story teller, and his concerts are legendary for their ability to inspire audiences.  Bowers is a member of the Frets Magazine “Gallery of the Greats”, along with Chet Atkins, David Grisman, Tony Rice, and other marquee names.  He is also a member of the “Autoharp Hall of Fame”, along with Mother Maybell and Sara Carter (of the pioneering Carter family, the first family of country music).  Bryan has performed at literally every folk festival in North America, and even had a hit on the Dr. Demento radio program (The Scottsman)!

“To call Bryan Bowers’ performance simply a concert would be inadequate if not inaccurate.  It could better be described as an experience.” Deseret News.

“Bowers is widely regarded as being the foremost virtuoso on the autoharp; he also has distinct gifts as a singer and songwriter.” People Magazine

Other featured acts at Winterfolk XXVII include talented young Portland songwriter Avery Hill, and Flying Fish Recording artist Don Lange who also operates the internationally successful Lange Winery, in Dundee, OR.

Kate Power and Steve Einhorn, the well-loved Portland duo who moved north a few years ago, will also return to the Winterfolk stage.  Multi-instrumentalist Kathryn Claire will make her first solo appearance at this year’s concert. Event founder Tom May and his musical partner Donny Wright will also perform.

Another great community organization and Winterfolk partner will be represented by The Artichoke All-Stars: Richard Colombo, Margaret Branch, Paul Kwitek, and Cole Carr who will each perform a song.

Part of the Winterfolk tradition is to hold a raffle for a guitar and studio time. Enter to win a beautiful Simon & Patrick Woodland Pro Folk Sunburst Guitar along with one day of studio time at Billy Oskay’s Big Red Studio. The entire prize package totals $1,779. Raffle tickets are $10, and are available at Artichoke Music (3130 SE Hawthorne), Arcane Amps (3341 SE Hawthorne) and Sisters’ admin office (618 NW Davis) on November . The winner will be drawn at Winterfolk, but the winner need not be present at the concert to win.
Check the Sisters website at sistersoftheroad.org or call Brenda at 503-222-5694 ext. 114 for more information.

There will be music for everyone at Winterfolk XXVI, along with the satisfaction of knowing that attending really does make a difference in our community. Guests can be sure that every dollar raised at Winterfolk goes directly to the people it is intended to help. All of the artists, national or locally based, completely donate their time and their talent. This participation is one of the unique elements of this event that has been happening annually for over a quarter of a century to benefit Sisters Of The Road.

Sisters continues to do its work of providing low-cost and no-cost meals in Portland’s Old Town Chinatown Neighborhood. Founded 35 years ago, it remains a shining example of an organization reaching out and helping to change people’s lives, one hot meal at a time
