Penn Information Systems & Computing
July 2019 Update
Consumer IAM (CIAM) Project
The Consumer IAM (CIAM) project will develop a new, cloud-based IAM system for populations who neither need nor want all the access privileges and security requirements associated with a PennKey (e.g., non-traditional learners, research collaborators, business partners, and other external affiliates). The CIAM system will provide an alternative credential for these populations and can be integrated with applications to provide a single sign-on experience. Recent progress includes:
  • The team is excited to announce that pilot rollout to the Department of Medical Ethics & Health Policy (MEHP) was completed on May 28, 2019. Rollout included a new single sign-on system for non-PennKey students in MEHP’s online learning programs. Instead of separate logins for course access and registration, students now log in with a single username and password, whether they are registering for a new course or accessing a current or previous one. Many thanks to our campus partners, especially Laura Hart and Caitlin O’Neill from MEHP and Molly Bonnard from the Library, for their invaluable collaboration throughout the project.
  • The team is partnering with Penn's Online Learning Initiative (OLI) to integrate CIAM into OLI’s new online student platform. We are currently gathering requirements and integration specifications. CIAM will support OLI’s vision to provide an end-to-end, Penn-branded experience for non-credit online learners.
  • The CIAM solution is being prepared for enterprise deployment as an ISC Access Management service offering. The team is planning to provide an administrator interface to enable clients to administer local accounts.
  • If you have any questions about the CIAM project, please contact us at penn-iam@upenn.edu.
Internal IAM Project
The Internal IAM project includes a re-engineering of Penn's core IAM infrastructure, replacing 15-year-old, custom-built identity management systems and processes with a standards-based, modern solution to strengthen Penn's overall security posture and ability to comply with emerging global regulatory requirements. The new cloud-based IAM solution will be implemented in phases. Recent progress includes:
  • The project team developed the following goals for FY20:
    • Complete solution requirements
    • Complete product request for proposal (RFP)
    • Complete proof-of-concept with finalist(s)
    • Define scope for release 1.0
    • Present business process implementation plans for client endorsement
  • If your group is seeking to deploy new applications in FY20 while Penn’s new IAM infrastructure is being developed and deployed, see the IAM Transition Guidance for New Applications document. If you have any questions, please contact us at penn-iam@upenn.edu.
  • The team provided a presentation on the IAM program at the IT Staff Convention in June. In case you missed it, you can view the presentation to learn about the latest developments in IAM at Penn.
