The Global Education Team is gearing up for the World Language Festival, on Saturday, May 13th at Deal Middle School. We are looking forward to a great day filled with delicious food, fun activities and amazing performances. We hope to see you there!
The DCPS Study Abroad program is organizing its Student Send-off Celebration to honor all student travelers and to kick off the start of the travel season. This event will be held at Dunbar HS on June 6, 2017 from 5:00 -- 7:00 PM, with doors opening at 4:30 PM.
We're also excited to announce that the Korean Culture Center of DC is generously donating transportation for DCPS field trips to their center. Read on to learn more about how to take advantage of this unique opportunity!

| May 10th is Slovenian Food Day!

The third of the four International Food Days for SY 2016-17 will take place on May 10th. The Global Education team, Office of Food and Nutrition Services, and the Embassy of Slovenia will be presenting a menu that highlights Slovenian local cuisine for breakfast, lunch, and supper at all DCPS schools. Want to get your students excited about trying new dishes for Slovenian Food Day? Check out these fun short videos about Slovenia: In honor of Slovenian Food Day, a special celebration with cultural programming will take place at Tubman ES in partnership with the Embassy Adoption Program. As a part of this celebration, Ms. Greenglass' 5th graders will be participate in a cooking class with visiting kid chefs from Slovenia. Every DCPS school will also be receiving a cookbook containing recipes for traditional Slovenian food that students can check out in their school libraries!

| Visit the Korean Culture Center

The Korean Cultural Center (KCC) Washington, D.C., a branch of the South Korean embassy and a hub of education and outreach in the nation’s capital, invites student groups to visit for a unique cultural field trip excursion. Starting in May, DCPS elementary and middle school classes can take advantage of complimentary transportation to and from the center in Northwest Washington, D.C. for an interactive program introducing Korea’s rich history, arts, society, ties with the U.S., and dynamic blend of traditional and popular culture. Each visit includes a presentation tailored by age group, hands-on cultural experiences, Q&A with staff, and a tour of the center’s various spaces, including art exhibitions, a digital gallery, and a recreation of a traditional Korean study. The KCC's visiting group program aims to foster greater understanding and friendship between Koreans and Americans, and reaching out to students to tell Korea's story is a key part of this effort. Educators and administrators interested in arranging a class visit to the KCC or getting more information are welcome to contact program coordinator Adam Wojciechowicz. The KCC can accommodate groups of around 25 up to 50 students, and visits generally last 1.5 to 2 hours. National Geographic Education Grants
National Geographic education grants will support projects that aim to teach people about the world and how it works, empowering them to make it a better place. Funded projects must align with one of the Society’s three focus lenses: The Human Journey, Wildlife and Wild Places, and Our Changing Planet. These lenses are described in more detail on the new grants website. Deadline is July 1. Learn more here.
I Speak Arabic Resources
Qatar Foundation International (QFI) has created an Arabic language awareness campaign with on-line resources available for teachers. In addition to documentary shorts, which highlight inspirational individuals from around the world who found success from speaking Arabic as a second language, the ispeakarabic.com platform provides access to resources, tools, and kits that expand on the teaching and learning of the Arabic language to non-native speakers.
Grants for PD Related to the Middle East
Qatar Foundation International (QFI) is offering Teacher Professional Development Awards for K-12 educators in the social sciences/humanities and arts fields to participate in professional development events that will enhance his/her ability to teach about the Arab world or Arab culture. These awards will provide up to $2,000 towards travel and registration costs associated with relevant PD opportunities. Learn more here.
Peace Trail on the National Mall
The U.S. Institute of Peace collaborated with the Guild of Professional Tour Guides of Washington, D.C. and the National Park Service to develop this path to a dozen sites on the Mall. The trail brings a “peace lens” to the experience of visiting the National Mall and it may be used as a self-guided walking tour or a reference guide, elevating stories of key figures, institutions, and moments in history that demonstrate America’s enduring commitment to peace. Visit the Smithsonian Anacostia Community Museum
This spring semester the museum will have the following exhibitions on view: Bridging the Americas: Community and Belonging from Panama to Washington, DC, Gateways, and The Backyard of Derek Webster’s Imagination which features a display that showcases the creativity and imagination of DC school students. Fund for Teachers Travel Grants
Interested in designing your own summer professional development experience? Fund for Teachers offers grants – up to $5,000 for individuals and up to $10,000 for teacher teams – for self-designed learning opportunities that can inspire D.C.'s educators. Previously, DCPS fellows have traveled to international locations such as Mexico, Finland, India, Ecuador, Spain, El Salvador, Vietnam, Cambodia, and South Korea.

Japan in DC Program
20 DC teens will get the opportunity to explore and get to know a wide variety of people, places, organizations, and businesses with connections to Japan through a summer-long program. Applicants should be current 9th, 10th, or 11th graders in a DCPS or DC charter high school. Students who successfully complete "Japan in DC" will be invited to join "Japanese Plus," our afterschool Japanese language, culture, and career exposure program, next school year. Teen Travel Writing Scholarship
The Family Travel Forum and the Society of American Travel Writers invite teens to share their travel experiences in words and images.The tenth annual Teen Travel Writing Scholarship is available to junior- and high-school students between the ages of 13 and 18. To be considered, applicants must submit a travel blog of no more than six hundred words with at least one photo, digital artwork, or video. Learn more here! Deadline: July 14, 2017
