Atmospheric River Research Flights Go Global
Atmospheric rivers, ribbons of water vapor in the sky that carry large amounts of water vapor, can be useful or destructive when they make landfall and release their moisture as heavy rain or snow. Since 2016, UC San Diego's Center for Western Weather and Water Extremes has led the Atmospheric River Reconnaissance program (AR Recon) with NOAA, using specially equipped aircraft to study these storms over the Pacific Ocean. This year, AR Recon is expanding through the Global Atmospheric River and Reconnaissance Program (GARRP), coordinating with research teams in Canada, Ireland, Germany and elsewhere to extend observations across both the Pacific and Atlantic oceans. The aim is to create more accurate forecasts and longer advance warnings to enhance water supplies and public safety.
