Hello Neighbor! Along with feeling disheartened by the many challenges of a seemingly endless quarantine, I’m also experiencing happiness. How is that possible?
Two happiness high points occurred during this otherwise gloomy week. Both provided glimpses of the world creaking open, offering re-connection to community.
These were simple events - a neighbor bringing a surprise flat of flowers and another who’d never called before, requesting a 6’ social distance walk together – both hardly earth shattering. But somehow, they rocked my constricted world with optimism, providing renewed connection and hopeful hints at lockdown’s impermanence. I was surprised and grateful for suddenly feeling happy.
So, if social distancing lasts longer to ensure that we can all be safe, I’m working at paying these good feelings forward, working to provide glimmers of hope for others as well as myself, cracking through our collective isolation.
Lately I’ve been on the lookout for ways to share and connect with others, starting with baking cookies for neighbors and cutting flowers tied with ribbons, leaving them on doorsteps. Widening the circle, I now add extra groceries to my own weekly list to give to the local food bank (Narberth Food Bank) and also contribute online (Philabundance and Eldernet Food Pantry) I’m happy doing these things and am now reaching out more frequently to friends, relatives, neighbors and community with my voice and my actions.
It’s ironic and pleasantly surprising that in the midst of a crisis, happiness can arise. I discovered that it is possible to keep it going but it takes awareness and practice.

THIS WEEK'S LOCAL LOVE
2nd Family Main Line An award winning home health care business, serving senior citizens & their families on the Main Line, offering non-medical support for every day life. By incorporating RN care coordination, a technology platform designed for families and elite caregivers, we can ensure your family members are receiving the best care possible. 2nd Family Co-Owner and Director of Nursing, Emily Glowacki, wanted to do something for the healthcare workers battling Covid on the frontlines. As a registered nurse with Jefferson and Penn Health systems, she saw the emotional and physical toll the pandemic was taking on her friends, former colleagues and co-workers as they were treating critically ill patients. On April 17th, Emily launched her Feed The Frontlines with 2nd Family initiative. Friends, family and followers of 2nd Family jumped right in with nominations of hard-working healthcare workers at local hospitals as well as monetary donations to support the cause. 2nd Family worked with local restaurants, including Desert Rose and Bittersweet Kitchen (both in Media) as well as Ripplewood Whiskey & Craft (In Ardmore) to deliver delicious meals to the nominees and their floors. Many floors are converted Covid-19 units due to the influx of positive patients. Since the April 17th launch, 2nd Family has raised nearly $5000, visited 10 different local hospitals (HUP, Jeff, Temple, Presby, Riddle, Chester County Hospital, Virtua in Voorhees, Crozer-Chester, Bryn Mawr & Lankenau Hospitals), 17 different floors and fed hundreds of local healthcare workers. Nominations and donations to the GoFundMe are still being accepted. To donate: email Emily Glowacki at emily@2ndfamilymainline.com

Paws@Play Dog Daycare Yes, I am open! Yes, I am accepting new dogs! Having 25+ years’ experience (15 years In the Main Line and winner of “Best of Main Line” for 9 years.in a row), I know I can give your pup the best care in the area. Paws@Play is small which gives me the chance to know the dogs individually and recognize any signs of change in behavior and alerting the parents if further care is necessary. No cages used – dogs run free playing and having fun all day mainly in the 1800 sq. ft. playroom. Nervous dogs are kept in a playroom with the very small dogs and will move to the bigger room only when they feel confident enough. VOTE! YOU CAN MAIL IT IN State’s primary election postponed from
April 28 until June 2. Recent voting reforms established a new convenient way for Pennsylvanians to vote: mail-in ballots. Similar to an absentee ballot, you may apply to receive a mail-in ballot in the mail to complete, and return to your county election office. However, unlike an absentee ballot, you may simply request a mail-in ballot without providing a reason.
