Boost your Brain Power: Unleashing your Cognitive Potential with Nutritional Supplements
November is National Alzheimer's Awareness Month and I thought it might be helpful to look at some of the top performers in the natural products industry for boosting brain power. While all discussions about brain power should include a healthy diet & lifestyle and a daily dosage of good fats like Omega 3 fatty acids, a deeper dive is needed to look at targeted ingredients to boost brain power.
Just like the alphabet we begin with the letter A, as in Acetyl-L-Carnitine. This is a fat- soluble form of L-Carnitine, which allows it to pass through the blood-brain barrier (BBB) to increase energy production in our brain cells & improve focus, acuity & retention. This ingredient is generally found in almost all the blends of products available from professional grade supplements. Bacopa has a long history of use in supporting cognition & memory function along with having antioxidant properties. Huperazine A is another component that has been shown to increase acetylcholine in our brains, improving memory & learning. A newer ingredient called Lion’s Mane mushroom has also been getting a lot of attention recently as it’s been shown to grow new nerve cells and improve memory & focus functions. Interestingly, it is also used for neuropathies for its ability to regrow nerve cells and found some notoriety during the Covid-19 pandemic for its ability to help people regain their taste & smell capacities. This is by no means a comprehensive list but a good place to begin to kick start your brain!
Michael Briggs, PharmD, CNC, ICCT serves as COO of Lionville Natural Pharmacy and has been published in The Professional Guide to Complementary & Alternative Therapies, Complementary and Alternative Medicine for Older Adults. The Nursing Drug Handbook Series, and Pharmacotherapy.
