This month, I hosted my annual event, Pound in Honor of Olivia Cash, to benefit the Y’s Staystrong cancer support program. Pound is an energizing community exercise class for all ages and fitness levels that combines rhythmic drumming with interval training. Seeing my friends, family, and Pound Fit community come together to raise awareness and funds for this life-changing program was incredibly special. This fundraiser was dedicated to my daughter Olivia, to raise awareness, offer support, and celebrate her life alongside the community that has given me so much strength. We had over one hundred attendees join us to Pound in Olivia's memory, and have raised over $20,000 to support Staystrong and help others in our community stay strong while experiencing a cancer diagnosis.
The South Shore YMCA Staystrong program is a lifeline for families facing a cancer diagnosis, as we once did. This year-long, free support program provides a sense of community, care, and encouragement during one of the toughest journeys a family can experience.
Olivia was diagnosed with leukemia at age 9 and, heartbreakingly, we lost her. My world shifted to caring for my other children while putting my own needs and my career as a nurse aside.
Over time, as my older children left for college, I decided to resume my nursing education. Despite my grief, I realized it was time to prioritize my own health and well being, and that's when I discovered Pound Fit.
Pound became my sanctuary, helping me heal both physically and emotionally. It allowed me to release years of built-up stress and rediscover my passion for health and wellness. Over the past five years, I've transformed both my body and mind, regaining the joy that had been missing since Olivia's passing 16 years ago.
Teaching Pound Fit classes in our community has given me the opportunity to share that joy and healing with others. Today, I work full-time as a nurse, focusing on oncology patients, and Olivia's journey continues to fuel my mission to support those battling cancer and help them thrive.
October is Staystrong month at the South Shore YMCA, and we are raising awareness and funds for this vital community program. To learn more about Staystrong or to donate, please visit ssymca.org/staystrong.
