Have you ever been tempted to take revenge? Some people have it coming. We want to give them what they deserve and repay them for their unkindness. But if we do, we will live with the consequences of our anger. Anger is like fire. Once it is started, we cannot control the damage it may do. Thank God for the ones who speak truth to us to temper our anger.
David’s men protected the wealthy farmer Nabal’s farm. In the time of the sheep shearing, David sent his men to ask Nabal for some food in repayment for their protection. Nabal, a surly, angry curmudgeon refused. Instead, he insulted David and his men. Righteous indignation came over David when he heard. He and his army prepared to repay Nabal. Then right on God’s standard time, Abigail came to David with gifts to appease his anger at her husband. She spoke words of wisdom, reminding David that God would take care of him and his enemies. David did not need to carry the guilt of an angry massacre with him into his reign as King of Israel. Her gentle answer turned away David’s wrath.
Whenever we are tempted, God provides a way out. When we see the exit ramp from anger, we must take it. Otherwise, our vitriol may take us to places we regret for the rest of our lives. The New Testament word for forgiveness means “to release.” First, who do you need to release today? The acid of anger corrodes our souls. Let it go. Second, is there anyone whom you can help before they harm someone else? Ask God to help you to intercede so that no harm is done. Jesus said, “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called the children of God." (Matthew 5:9)
