Job 42:1-6
 Then Job replied to the Lord:
“I know that you can do all things;
    no purpose of yours can be thwarted.
You asked, ‘Who is this that obscures my plans without knowledge?’
    Surely I spoke of things I did not understand,
    things too wonderful for me to know.
“You said, ‘Listen now, and I will speak;
    I will question you,
    and you shall answer me.’
My ears had heard of you
    but now my eyes have seen you.
Therefore I despise myself
    and repent in dust and ashes.”

New International Version (NIV)
               Eugene Peterson called prayer, “answering God.”  God has the first word and the last word.  When he speaks to us, what will we say in response? After God spoke, he invited Job to respond.  In humility he replied, “No further questions, your Honor.”

                Have we come to the place where Job waved the white flag of surrender?  “I had heard about you God.  But now I have seen you.”  Most of us know God by reputation.  That is one thing.  But it is something quite different to have a face to face, one on one life-transforming encounter with God.

                Many of us say we would like to ask God about this or that.  Perhaps someday we will have our chance.  When we do what will we say?  When all of life caves in, what then?  Then we know that God is there and that God really cares.  As Michael Card sang, “Could it be the only Answer that means anything is you?”  God is not the God we thought we wanted.  But he is the God we always needed.
Pray with me:
Father, thank you for the gift of prayer.  So often we need to articulate our thoughts to you.  Jumbled, we stumble and mumble.  Today, let our silence for the next few moments become an honest expression of our dependence on you.  No further questions, your Honor.  You have always been and will always be, enough for us.  In Jesus’ name.  Amen.
This year our Every Day with Jesus readings will follow The Bible Project Read Scripture Plan.  Copies of this reading plan are available at Tallowood Baptist Church, or download
