Celebrating Nurses and Skilled Nursing Care Week

Every year, from May 6th to 12th, nurses are recognized for their service and dedication to caring for others and improving the health of patients and residents nationwide through National Nurses Week. Nurses Week celebrates the effort, dedication, and sacrifice nurses make every day. It’s only fitting that Nurses Week concludes on May 12th, which happens to be Florence Nightengale’s birthday. Nurses are essential members of America's healthcare workforce who provide care through every stage of life, working with patients and residents at their most intimate and vulnerable moments. Nurses Week offers a chance to highlight and celebrate nurses for all they do.

The International Council of Nurses (ICN) has announced the theme for International Nurses Day 2026 (May 12) as “Our Nurses, Our Future. Empowered Nurses Save Lives”. This theme focuses on supporting nurses through safe working conditions, fair pay, and leadership opportunities to maximize their impact on global health. In the United States, the American Nurses Association (ANA) has chosen the theme “The Power of Nurses” for National Nurses Week. This campaign highlights the influence of nurses in healthcare, focusing on elevating their voices, ensuring well-being, and honoring their contributions.

Both campaigns, while having slightly different phrasing, share the goal of recognizing, empowering, and supporting the nursing profession.

Nursing has always been a profession that needs more than just your time and knowledge. Nursing requires heart, passion, and dedication to serving others. Nurses Week allows the public to acknowledge and thank nurses for the work they choose every day. It's a chance for us to pause and thank the nurses who have made a difference in our careers.

I would like to take this opportunity to extend my sincerest appreciation to all of The Lutheran Home Association Nurses, who provide their expertise, time, and talents to all who serve. Your care and compassion make the difference in so many lives. Take time to enjoy your special week.

Have you ever thought about how a few hours could make a difference?

The Lutheran Home: Belle Plaine is always looking for folks of all ages, willing to provide or help with meaningful experiences for our residents. Board games and puzzles, arts and crafts, bingo parties, gardening and flower planting, singing, playing the piano or other musical instruments, acting performances, and even trivia are all welcome ideas. Or bring an idea of your own!

May’s Star of the Month is Adrianna Pozzi!

Adrianna works in our Dietary department as a Dietary Aide and an Assistant Cook and will soon be moving into a Cook position.

Adrianna has an outstanding dedication and strong work ethic. She ensures that all room trays are prepared and delivered efficiently, making sure every resident is served on time without delays. She is a dependable team player and someone we can always count on. Adrianna’s commitment and passion for her work make her very deserving of this recognition. - Nomination by coworker

Jesus said to him, “I am the Way and the Truth and the Life. No one comes to the Father, except through me.” John 14:6

Wow! Look at the claim that Jesus is making! “I am the Way and the Truth and the Life!” Then look at the setting where Jesus makes this claim. He and the disciples had just celebrated the Passover. During the dinner he revealed that Judas was betraying him. Then Jesus went on to tell them that he was only going to be with them a little longer. He also said that where he was going they couldn’t go now, but they would go later. Peter was so sure that what Jesus said didn’t apply to him. He was willing to lay down his life for Jesus. But Jesus told him that he would deny him three times before dawn!

All the disciples knew that something was up.
