Isaiah 43:1-3
But now, this is what the Lord says—
    he who created you, Jacob,
    he who formed you, Israel:
“Do not fear, for I have redeemed you;
    I have summoned you by name; you are mine.
 When you pass through the waters,
    I will be with you;
and when you pass through the rivers,
    they will not sweep over you.
When you walk through the fire,
    you will not be burned;
    the flames will not set you ablaze.
For I am the Lord your God,
    the Holy One of Israel, your Savior;
I give Egypt for your ransom,
    Cush and Seba in your stead.

New International Version (NIV)
                 The toddler looked up defiantly and said, “You are not the boss of me.”  Like him, most of us don’t like to be told what to do.  Our own autonomy makes us reluctant to yield control of our lives to anyone.

                What right does God have to be our boss?  To the Israelites in exile, God explained his claim through the prophet:  the one who created them had redeemed them.  He had summoned them by name and they were his.   Best of all God promised them to be with them through the water and the fire.

                What right does God have to give us directions?  Every right.  He is the only one who created us and redeemed us.  Our God promises to be with us no matter what we face.  He is the Lord our God, the Holy One, our Savior.  C. S. Lewis was right:  there are two kinds of people.  Some say to God, “Your will be done.”  To the others God says, “Alright then.  Have it your way.”
Pray with me:
Sovereign God, we hereby abdicate control of our lives.  Not our will but yours be done.  In Jesus’ name.  Amen.
This year our Every Day with Jesus readings will follow The Bible Project Read Scripture Plan.  Copies of this reading plan are available at Tallowood Baptist Church, or download
the app at readscripture.org.  Read through the Bible with us in 2019!
Joyfully,
