Although COVID has brought another trying year for all of us, your commitment to collaborative quality improvement has resulted in ongoing progress in improving patient outcomes. This year, we reached a significant milestone as BMC2 celebrated 25 years. We have marked this throughout the year with a special video, infographic, timeline, and messages to media, highlighting your achievements. The collective work done by BMC2 would not be possible without your contributions and desire to provide continuous improvement in care. We thank you for your dedication and commitment to our patients. Happy Holidays and best wishes for a healthy and happy new year!

With the launch of our newsletter and blog this year, we’ve been sharing Site Spotlights. These stories outline the achievements of individual sites and teams across the collaborative. For example, at Spectrum Health Lakeland, sharing information at morning huddles and healthy competition between physicians helped improve their peak intra-procedure activated clotting time documentation. The team at McLaren Bay Region decreased the number of opioid-naïve vascular surgery patients being prescribed greater than 10 opioid pills at discharge. We are excited to share these summaries of the amazing work you are doing. You can read all our site spotlights on our blog.

This year, BMC2 was featured by a variety of news outlets, including TCTMD and Cardiology Today. Among other topics, articles outlined how BMC2 data has shown that opioids are effective for pain control, but that some patients are using them for the first time after a procedure intended to reduce pain, creating a potentially dangerous side effect for previously opioid-naïve patients, and that smokers had their first angioplasty and/or stent nearly a decade earlier than non-smokers and patients with obesity underwent these procedures 4 years earlier than non-obese patients. We are excited to see your achievements recognized locally and nationally. News stories featuring BMC2 can be found on our website under News and Events.

Our Patient Advisory Council launched this fall. Members of the council meet quarterly to advise on tools to help improve patient care and safety. They attend BMC2 meetings and share their feedback. They will work to identify gaps in patients' PCI care management and communication with health care providers. In the future, they may also they might also advise on how and when BMC2 should communicate with patients. The goal is to engage patients early, before decisions are made, working toward patient-partnered care and mutual learning. The team has been busy at work with their first partnership, giving feedback on an app for risk assessment. We could still use a few more patients for the council. If you have someone you would like to refer, learn how on our blog.
