Student Disability Service Welcomes New Staff Member
Student Disability Services (SDS) would like to welcome our new Associate Director, Mark Gross.  Mark's role with SDS includes the management of LD/ADHD services, the SAM case management system, adaptive technology and training initiatives, reporting metrics, and additional leadership within the office.  Please join us in extending a warm welcome to Mark!

Digital Camera - Student Affairs Loan
Off Campus Outreach and Communication has a Nikon 3300 DSLR camera for occasional loaning out to Student Affairs Departments at no charge. The primary purpose for camera use is for acquiring digital photos for use on the Department website.
General guidelines:
1. Request the camera by emailing Jen O’Brien at OBrienJC@MiamiOH.edu. Please include the following information in your request and copy the Department Director on your email:
  • Department
  • Brief explanation of why you need the camera
  • Pick up and drop off dates and whether these are flexible or not
  • What experience you have with a DSLR camera and whether or not you need a few minutes of training.
2. The max loan period is four days.
3. The person who will be responsible for the camera will be asked to sign for it when picking it up.
4. When you return the camera, please do not delete any pictures.
Not all requests will be granted (based on availability). Contact Jen O’Brien if you have any questions.

Tech Tip of the Week

From Jen O'Brien
TIP: Improve the readability of your emails, web writing and more through one simple website.
WHY: Unless you’re working on a piece of creative writing, your writing in Student Affairs has one purpose: to convey a message to your reader.
Whether that message is through a webpage, an office brochure, an annual report, or just an email, you want the reader to easily understand you.
Use the Hemingway App Editor to analyze a piece of writing for active voice, complicated sentences, unnecessary adverbs, and general readability. The app will assign a grade level and provide suggestions on how to improve the piece. You should aim for grade level 11 or below.
HOW:  Visit the Hemingway App Editor website and click on the “write” box at the top right side of the screen. Enter your text into the editor and then click the “edit” button. Your analysis will appear in the right pane of the screen.

UNITED WAY UNSUNG HERO AWARD
Congratulations to Cameron Snyders (Delta Chi) and Sarah Crabtree (Pi Beta Phi) winners of the United Way of Oxford Unsung Hero Award. (Image attached)

United Way of Oxford & Vicinity: United Way of Oxford’s exclusive opportunity to honor those individuals and groups who are serving the greater good.

COLLEGE STUDENT AWARD: Students who are enrolled at least part time in a post-secondary education program at a college, university or trade school are eligible for nomination in this category. Nominees should be active leaders on campus in areas of philanthropy and community service; active involvement on and off campus through volunteer activities and fundraising are recommended for nominees.

Here were Amy Macechko's remarks if you want to write something up using her quotes:

"It is our great privilege to be here tonight to recognize two college students who serve as amazing role models to their peers and are truly striving to make a difference in the greater Oxford area.  These two leaders take opportunities to showcase the true asset that Miami Greeks are to the greater Oxford area.

Cameron and Sarah worked with many community members to plan and implement the first ever Greek Service and Philanthropy Week for the Greek community. Both individuals are amazing examples for their fellow Miami students of what a positive experience it can be to intentionally interact with the local community.

We admire their commitment to bridging the gap between Miami students and the greater community. Their efforts are most deserving of recognition and we are fortunate to have them as college leaders in our community."
NASPA Undergraduate Fellows Program (NUFP):
Call for Mentors and Mentees
I am currently recruiting undergraduate students to join the NASPA Undergraduate Fellows Program (NUFP) AND interested Graduate Students and staff to be mentors for these students! NUFP is a mentoring program for students interested in exploring the field of student affairs and  who identify as a member of a traditionally underrepresented or historically disenfranchised student population, including, but not limited to Black/African American, Asian, Hispanic/Latino(a), Indigenous (Native American, Alaskan, Hawaiian), Multiethnic, Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, or as having a disability. Here is the link to the application which is due for fall enrollment on October 31st! If you know students who are interested and would benefit from this program, please send me their names and encourage them to apply! Additionally, if YOU would like to be paired as a mentor, let me know! If you have questions about the program, please contact Courtney Wallace at wallacc5@miamioh.edu. Thanks for your support in being intentional about diversifying the field of student affairs!
