May 2, 2022
Greetings, and congratulations, everyone!
We’ve made it through another academic year, and we’re back in person, making the most of our campus facilities. Take a moment before we all shift attention to our summer activity to pat yourself on the back for any number of reasons—successful classes, outstanding performances or exhibitions, perhaps heading home with a new degree or two—and we did it under cautious and protective conditions required by the ongoing pandemic. We continued to grow and thrive as a community, and our successes are a product of our collaborative, cooperative and caretaking relationships. I ask you to continue to keep one eye on that community as you go forward this summer—please stay on the lookout for these newsletters, and communication from the DFPA or from your individual areas. I look forward to updating you on work continuing in the DFPA through the summer, as well as introduce you to new colleagues joining us or joining us in new capacities in the fall.
I wish you a reflective, productive and regenerative summer season. Be safe, and enjoy!

Extra Lemonade

Reception and Awards Ceremony: May 13 11:30 am – 1:30 pm | REGISTER HERE

On view at the Ralph Arnold Gallery at 1131 West Sheridan Avenue and online.
Extra Lemonade is an exhibition of the work of Loyola University Chicago’s most recent Fine Art graduates. With a variety of approaches to making across multiple disciplines, this exhibition represents the ambition, passion, and activism that make Loyolans stand out. The investigations and discoveries within Extra Lemonade are often poignant and surprising and have become even more complex in these unprecedented times of protest and pandemic. Like the rest of the world, these students are asking the difficult question of what comes next — not just for themselves, but for the world that their work represents.

Soft Points
May 6 - May 15
Opening Celebration: May 6 | 12:00 pm – 2:00 pm

On view in the Mundelein Greenhouse | Mundelein 719.
Soft Points is a pop-up exhibition presented in the Greenhouse as the culmination of Loyola University Chicago’s Painting II course
Students were prompted to create a project within the exploratory and experimental field of “Expanded Painting”. Individual projects incorporate painting, paired with various disciplines such as sculpture, installation, fibers, drawing, alternative materials, and photography. The Greenhouse also offers a unique setting for students to respond specifically to site, color palette, and architecture.
The instructor for the course, Gina Hunt, presented over 30 contemporary artists working within the field of Expanded Painting to introduce the project. Each artwork is also paired with an artist statement.
The exhibition opens to the public Friday, May 6 with an opening celebration from 12pm-2pm. The exhibition will be open and viewable during regular building hours until Sunday, May 15. The Greenhouse is located on Loyola University’s Lake Shore Campus in Mundelein 719.
Artists featured in the exhibition include: Julia Abbott | Abigail Apple | Rayna Bartling | Eliza Busch-Lawm | Nicole Caron | Connor Gartner | Safia Ismail | Kiana Janson | Carla Jauregui | Riley Kelly | Eli Kosinski Cesar Lopez | Erin McLaughlin | Mary Clare Muehlemann | Kathleen Simms | Erica Wong |
Access and Resources
Campus Operations
Loyola's Return to Campus and COVID-19 websites have now been merged to form the Health, Safety, and Well-Being Update website. This site contains all up-to-date information on required health and safety practices for anyone on our campuses as well as resources for students, faculty, and staff.
In addition, the DFPA has developed department specific guidelines (DFPA Plans/Protocols for Spring 2022); it is strongly encouraged that you read through all this information carefully. It is expected that all DFPA faculty and staff will follow the university and departmental protocols while on campus.
COVID-19 Testing
Regular testing can help minimize the spread of COVID-19 and help keep one another safe. If you have not signed up for Loyola’s free surveillance testing program, please visit the On-Campus Testing web page to register and schedule a test.

Summer Building Access

Unless there are specific University-supported events scheduled, all academic buildings generally lock around 6:00pm during the summer. If there are any events running later than 6:00pm, the building stays open for that event. Exterior doors may be locked during building hours over the summer months, but faculty, staff, and eligible students can swipe into buildings using their UVIDs.

Service Requests
We have staff that perform building rounds on a regular basis and file necessary service requests, but we have many heavily used spaces, and any assistance is appreciated.

  • If you encounter a non-urgent maintenance issue (light bulb replacement, housekeeping issues, etc.), please visit this link to submit a service request. You can also visit the Mundelein Center Information Desk and the student staff there can assist with submitting the request.
  • If you encounter an urgent maintenance issue (leaks, HVAC issues, etc.), please contact Operations and Concert Manager, Jeffery Hart (jhart5@luc.edu) and he will pursue a resolution to the issue.
  • If you encounter an emergency maintenance issue (flood, elevator entrapment, gas odors, etc.), please contact Campus Safety immediately at 773-508-7233.
Promoting Our Events
Sharing Our Story and Spotlighting Our Community
The DFPA develops artists, designers, scholars, and arts leaders in a creative community that shares the Loyola vision of valuing freedom of inquiry, the pursuit of truth, and care for others. We do this through creative mentorship in and out of the classroom, studio, and rehearsal hall, through the application of arts research and practice in our public programming, and by teaching our students the value of critical reflection within a liberal arts context.
You and your students are our story, and we want to partner with you to share the activities of this unique arts community with others at Loyola and beyond through our websites, social media channels, and  more.
For submissions, ideas, or related questions, please contact José Pérez at jperez32@luc.edu.
Faculty Action Items
Faculty  Profile Updates
If you do not currently have a faculty profile on the DFPA website or would like to update your profile, please  complete and submit the  Biography and Headshot Form . Faculty pages are among the most frequently visited pages on our website.  Students  often  look up faculty when they’re shopping for classes so it is important to keep your profile current.

It is important for a variety of reasons that we have your updated home phone and address while we are working remotely, please  complete this form to update our records. Thank you!
