2022 Foreign Minister’s Commendation

On August 4, 2022, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced the recipients of the 2022 Foreign Minister's Commendation and Mr. Sadafumi Uchiyama (Chief Curator of the Portland Japanese Garden) has been awarded the Foreign Minister's Commendation in recognition of his achievements in promoting Japanese culture in the United States. Foreign Minister's Commendation recipients are selected from a wide range of individuals who have made particularly remarkable achievements in various fields of international relations, and who have contributed significantly to the promotion of friendly relations between Japan and other countries. Oregon-Toyama 30th Anniversary Commemorative Visit

From July 31 to August 7, a delegation from Toyama prefecture led by Governor Nitta visited Oregon to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the Sister-State relationship between Oregon and Toyama. Governor Nitta visited Governor Brown and both Governors signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on economic exchange, personal exchange and human resource development, academic exchange, and tourism. The delegation also toured local businesses and exchanged views with entrepreneurs. Approximately 100 people from both Oregon and Toyama prefectures attended the commemorative reception held on August 2.

Oregon Nisei Veterans World War II Memorial Highway Sign Unveiling Ceremony

In March, Gov. Kate Brown signed a bill passed by the Oregon legislature dedicating a highway in honor of Oregon Japanese American World War II veterans. On August 13, a ceremony was held in Hood River to commemorate the highway's completion. Consul General Shiga sent a letter of congratulations in recognition of the veterans and many in the Japanese-American community who have worked so long and hard to make this bill a reality.

The Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Neck Ribbon, Professor Kominz's mini-documentary

NHK World-Japan recently aired an English language mini-documentary about PSU’s May 2022 Kabuki production of “The Sardine Seller’s Net of Love” on their Newsroom Tokyo program. The documentary features highlights from the May 27 performance and spotlights the contributions and career of Professor Emeritus Larry Kominz, who directed the student production. What If Heroes Were Not Welcome Home?

When: Aug 8 – Dec 31
Where: The History Museum, Hood River OR
This exhibit examines the prejudice that Japanese American veterans from Hood River, Oregon experienced upon their return home from serving our country in World War II. It uses first-hand accounts, photos, letters, and historical documents to show how wartime events brought national notoriety to the small community of Hood River.
