DIRECTOR'S NOTE
What an exciting January it was as the Oklahoma Film + Music Office started the year at Sundance, where we had the opportunity to spotlight Oklahoma while networking with filmmakers and industry folks from around the globe at our filmmaker's reception. This successful trip was made possible by the gracious support of our partners, Dunlap Codding and the Tulsa Office of Film, Music, Arts & Culture. We also thank deadCENTER Film Festival for providing a giveaway of passes for their 2016 event.

Another shout out goes to our Okie film talent represented at Sundance this year including Tracy Letts who starred in Christine and Indignation, Blake Pickens who produced The Land and Elizabeth Woods who wrote and directed White Girl, to name a few. We’d also like to congratulate OU Alumni Nate Parker who wrote, directed, produced and starred in The Birth of A Nation, which landed a record-breaking distribution deal and took home the Grand Jury Prize and Audience Award at the festival.

On the home front, if you’re a local filmmaker, music-maker or involved with these industries at all, we invite you to get connected at one of our many events, including the launch of our networking and mentoring series on March 2nd. See you out there!

FEATURED FILM ARTIST OF THE MONTH
Nathan Gardocki has been working in the Oklahoma film industry since 2007 when he enrolled in Oklahoma City University’s Moving Image Arts Program. While attending OCU, Gardocki worked on seven feature films and began a side business renting his camera and sound equipment to local production companies and individuals. In 2010, he graduated Cum Laude and officially formed his video equipment rental company, Nathan Gardocki Productions (NGP). After a short nine year’s in the Oklahoma film industry, Gardocki has twenty-two feature film credits including ten credits as Unit Production Manager on films such as Monday at 11:01 AM, Crazy Enough and Rudderless which all utilized the Oklahoma Film Enhancement Rebate Program. NGP has also expanded their inventory to include cameras, sound equipment, lighting, grip, production supplies and much more.

“I am very fortunate to be part of the Oklahoma film community,” he said. “Oklahomans are among the nicest people I’ve ever met. I plan to stay in Oklahoma no matter what, and I can see film education playing a big role in my future”

Gardocki is currently helping to develop a feature film that will shoot on Pauls Valley this summer and NGP’s rental website will be launching this month at www.ngpfilm.com.
FEATURED MUSIC ARTIST OF THE MONTH
Brian Horton has always been a fan of live music having been heavily involved with his brother's band through his high school and college years, acting as a sound engineer, promoter and manager, and played a similar role with both of his son's bands. His more active involvement in the Tulsa music scene began around 2007 when a number of younger artists started to collaborate and emerge as the next generation of a rich musical heritage. Being first and foremost a fan, the act of helping the musicians grew into the non-profit, volunteer-based music organization known as Horton Records, which provides support for recording, distribution, promotion, booking, management and administration.
Horton Records' scope and reach has continued to grow steadily with an objective of connecting musicians to resources and building the community. One off-shoot of that effort is The Oklahoma Room at Folk Alliance International. "The Oklahoma Room came about through discussions with Scott Aycock and Folk Salad Radio. In the spirit of community, we wanted to join forces across the state and take a collective group of musicians to showcase at the event and highlight the wonderful talent that we have in Oklahoma,” Horton says of the event.

Art is All Around Us
From the celebration of small town heroes and history to the revitalization of urban cityscapes, art is all around us. The walls of the buildings along historic Jim Thorpe Boulevard in Prague, Oklahoma are adorned with murals by Andrew “Ace” Walker. The Prague Heritage Mural (2008) and Prague Kolache Festival Mural (2013) pay tribute to the community’s rich heritage as well as perhaps its most famous resident Olympian Jim Thorpe.

Similarly, t
he Tulsa Office of Film, Music, Arts & Culture (TFMAC) has been working with Tulsa-based art group Clean Hands, to develop murals around the city. A wall at the southwest corner of 4th and Cheyenne, attached to the Mayo Motor Inn Parking Garage, was selected for a mural. With approval from The Mayo who owns that building, TFMAC and Clean Hands finalized a concept for this particular mural. The mural was completed in November 2015 and celebrates Tulsa’s historically rich contributions to the arts including film and music.
If you are interested in showcasing your community or featuring your location in the Oklahoma Locations Guide, please contact Yousef Kazemi at Yousef.Kazemi@TravelOK.com or visit our website for more information.
