POD Center Faculty Grant Incentives Survey
For those who have yet to complete this survey, we are hoping to gather information from POD Center Faculty regarding grant submission incentives.
As the POD Center has transitioned to the Betty Irene Moore School of Nursing, information on how grants are currently submitted with affiliated faculty and their departments could provide a better understanding on any incentives faculty receive when submitting grants. We will use this information to create a proposal for SON to support us with similar incentives for future grant proposals submitted through the POD Center.

Funder: Internally Coordinated Programs at UC Davis
Amount: $50,000
Details: The UC Davis School of Medicine and UC Davis Clinical and Translational Science Center (CTSC), in collaboration with the UC Davis Office of Research, are pleased to announce the first round of funding intended to incentivize collaborative science by new research teams. We are seeking bold ideas that will open new areas of investigation between UC Davis Schools and Colleges and have a multiplicative effect on extramural research funding in the near future. The program will provide one year of funding for up to six multi-school teams to support planning, preparation, and submission of team-based applications. Each team must include representatives from at least one UCD School of Medicine department and at least one UCD department outside of the School of Medicine. The NIH multiple PI (MPI) mechanism is highly preferred. The budget should not exceed $50,000 per team. Staff and/or graduate student support is permitted as well as expenses related to eventual extramural submissions.

Details: The purpose of the Maternal and Child Health Policy Innovation Program (MCH PIP) is to support innovative city, county, or state-level policy initiatives that improve outcomes and reduce associated health disparities for maternal and child health populations. Successful award recipients will provide technical assistance (TA) to stakeholders, including governors’ offices, state legislatures, state and local health officials, and other state and local officials to help them develop and implement policy initiatives that improve outcomes and reduce related health disparities. Technical assistance will include (1) convening learning communities (LCs) that engage stakeholders (listed above) in addition to community members and people with lived experience and (2) developing and disseminating informational resources such as (but not limited to) policy briefs, webinars, and/or legislation trackers. Technical assistance for policy initiatives that address social determinants of health (SDOH), such as improving access to quality affordable housing, healthy foods, or transportation, is especially encouraged. Award recipients will also support TA for cities, counties, and/or states on Maternal and Child Health Bureau (MCHB) priority topics such as maternal and infant mortality and readiness for obstetric emergencies, and emerging MCH issues (recent examples of which include congenital syphilis, environmental health threats, Medicaid redetermination, and vaccine promotion).

Paige Gilliland, PhD Student, HEAL Lab
Paige is a first year PhD student in Human Development working at the Health Equity Across the Lifespan (HEAL) Lab under Dr. Leigh Ann Simmons. She started working at the HEAL lab as an undergrad in 2022 and began working on a first-authorship publication titled, "Patient-Provider Trust as a Key Component of Prenatal Screening for Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs): A Concept Analysis", which is now in press for the Journal of Midwifery and Women's Health. Throughout her first year as a PhD student, Paige has worked on the GROWell project and the Welcome Baby project, learning skills in both biorepository and interview coding. Currently, Paige is working on data collection and analysis for her pre-dissertation project on maternal mental health, ACEs, and breastfeeding behaviors. Paige is most interested in understanding health behaviors associated with early trauma exposure and how early interventions can help build resilience in parents and families.

Where did you grow up?
I am originally from Great Falls, Montana, but moved to Eugene, Oregon when I was 10 years old. My Dad passed away shortly after moving to Eugene and after three years of living there my Mom met my Stepdad who lived in Chico, California. I was in Chico for all of high school and the first two years of my undergrad so I feel more attached to Chico out of all of the places I have lived.
What drew you to this field?
I started undergrad at Butte Community College and while in school I was also working at a home visiting non-profit called Butte Baby Steps. Butte Baby Steps introduced me to the world of social work, home visiting, and early intervention services. I was not qualified to be a home visitor but I worked as a data entry clerk and was able to sit in on staff meetings. I heard testimonials from the staff about their home visits and the prevalence of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) in Butte County. I was 100% hooked on home visiting and early intervention services and was very curious about ACEs, maternal mental health, the intergenerational transmission of ACEs, and early intervention policy.
Where are you happiest at work?
At work I am definitely happiest in lab meetings where I get to talk to my colleagues and learn more about their projects.
Where are you happiest outside of work?
Outside of work I am happiest hiking, eating, and spending time with my family and boyfriend of 6 years.
Is your work area messy or clean?
At work my space is definitely clean!

Intimate Partner Violence Among Birthing People: Rural–Urban Differences and Implications for Safety and Equity Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a contributor to maternal mortality. Maternal health risks and experiences of violence differ for pregnant people in rural and urban communities. This presentation will explore rural–urban differences in IPV and the distinct risks faced by rural birthing people. Dr. Kozhimannil will describe research findings based on data from the Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System, revealing higher rates of IPV and lower rates of abuse screening among rural residents versus those living in urban areas.

Participants will hear from two states where partnership efforts are underway.

Publications and Resources
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recently released a report on maternal mortality rates from 2022. The report finds the maternal mortality rate for 2022 decreased to 22.3 deaths per 100,000 live births, compared with a rate of 32.9 in 2021. However, the maternal mortality rate for Black women was 49.5 deaths per 100,000 live births and was significantly higher than rates for White (19.0), Hispanic (16.9), and Asian (13.2) women.
Provisional 2023 Data on U.S. Births The provisional general fertility rate declined 3% in 2023 from 2022 and the number of births in 2023 went down 2% from the number of births in 2022. The rate for cesarean delivery rose from 32.1% in 2022 to 32.4% in 2023. The low-risk cesarean delivery rate increased from 26.3% in 2024 to 26.6% in 2023. The rate of preterm births in 2023 remained generally unchanged at 10.41% compared to 10.38% in 2022.
