Dear Blue Devils,
It's hard to believe we're already at the midpoint of the semester. You’re no doubt balancing midterm assignments with campus life, registration for spring, and many decision points around life, plans and people. This is often the time of year when the pace really picks up. This feels like a good time to remind everyone that taking care of yourself is a fundamental part of your academic success and of the skills you gain during your time at Duke.
Here are some reminders going into the second half of the semester:
Get enough sleep. This is easier said than done, especially during crunch time, but 7 or more hours really does make a difference. Your brain needs rest to process and retain all that learning and to recharge for what’s next.
Stay healthy. Wash your hands regularly, don't share drinks or utensils, and if you're feeling sick, rest and recover. A little prevention can keep a cold from becoming a much bigger situation.
Move your body. Continue to prioritize getting your heart rate up in ways that work for you. A quick walk around the Sarah P. Duke Gardens, getting to your workout, or being at that pickup game in Wilson or Brodie can reset your energy and mood. Physical activity makes for one of the best stress-relievers.
Get your flu shot if you haven't already. Flu season is here, and flu shots are available on campus for free. It's a simple step that can save you from losing a week to illness right when you can't afford it. Find the next available flu clinic here.
Take real breaks. Stepping away to breathe, meditate, or look at something other than a screen for a few minutes can help you return to your work more focused.
Stay connected. Catch up with a friend over lunch or coffee, stop by an event, or call home. Social connection matters, especially when things get stressful.
Imposter syndrome is real and comparison is the thief of joy. If you’re new to campus – or even if you’ve been here a while – you might be feeling the impact of working alongside so many talented and brilliant people and wondering how you fit in. That’s pretty standard for this time of year, too. Remember that about 6500 other Duke students grapple with this from time to time, as do the rest of us. You belong and you are brilliant.
Remember what's available to you. The Dean of Students Office and resources across campus are here for you, whether it’s helping you find your fit at Duke, helping you stay healthy, or just being a safe place to talk when you need it.
