100 days! Hip, hip, hooray! 🎉
We’ve learned and laughed along the way.
But ah-choo! The flu’s about, 🤧
So wash your hands, don’t sneeze it out!
Valentine’s Day is almost here,
Let’s show some love and keep it clear.
Skip the plastic, go green instead, ♻️
Make cards with love (and scraps from bed)!
Stay healthy, be kind, and have some fun,
100 days down, and more learning to come! ❤️

A tremendous thank you to our PA and wonderful volunteers who helped to organize a delicious oatmeal bar for faculty and staff earlier this week! Our hearts (and bellies) are so full!

| Happy 100th Day!
Even though it’s been several weeks since the true midpoint, today is significant and does truly feel like a touchstone for the school year.
And how quickly the remainder of the year will pass now! End of trimester, online auction, spring break, GrandFriends Day, Middle School signature trips, Lower School overnights, celebration of friends, then finally…8th grade graduation. Similarly, these beautiful 70-degree days have made the winter weather of last month seem like a distant memory. Read more >>>

Celebrating Black History Month
|
|
|
The Quaker community has long been intertwined with the lives and contributions of numerous Black individuals who have championed social reform, education policies, and civil rights. Their stories reflect a shared commitment to equality and justice and the tireless work to bridge cultural and racial divides. Throughout this Black History Month, we'll be highlighting different figures whose remarkable legacies continue to inspire us to do good in the world.
|
-
Mahala Ashley Dickerson (1912–2007): Born in Alabama, Mahala Ashley Dickerson was a pioneering lawyer and the first African American woman admitted to the Alabama Bar in 1948. She later became the first Black woman to practice law in Alaska. After World War II, Dickerson became a Quaker and remained deeply involved in civil rights cases throughout her career. Her commitment to justice and equality exemplified Quaker principles in action.
-
Bayard Rustin (1912–1987): A native of West Chester, Pennsylvania, Rustin was raised Quaker and a pivotal figure in the Civil Rights Movement. He was a key advisor to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the chief organizer of the 1963 March on Washington. Rustin's Quaker beliefs deeply influenced his commitment to non-violence and social justice.
-
Paul Cuffe (1759–1817): Paul Cuffe was a successful sea captain, entrepreneur, and abolitionist of African and Native American descent. Born free in Massachusetts, he became a Quaker and used his resources to advocate for the resettlement of freed African Americans to Sierra Leone. Cuffe's efforts in promoting education and economic self-sufficiency for Black communities were deeply rooted in his Quaker values.

EE in Action: Here's How You Can Get Involved in 2 Local Initiatives
|
|
|
Just as we wrap up phase two of our Native Tree Nursery Project--planting tree seeds with every single student at FSW--two new opportunities for environmental education and action have emerged right here in the greater Wilmington area! First, an ongoing petition to #SaveSledgeForest in Castle Hayne, and second, an invitation to a ceremonial planting of 400 Hooheh (Longleaf Pine) seedlings at the Waccamaw Siouan Tribal Grounds. Here’s how you can get involved:
|
-
#SaveSledgeForest: Sledge Forest—one of the last big stretches of old-growth forest in our county—is at a crossroads. Home to centuries-old trees, wetlands, and diverse wildlife, it’s now the site of a proposed large-scale housing development. For our students, environmental education isn’t just in textbooks—it’s unfolding in real time. This is a great opportunity to bring those lessons home. Ask your child how wetlands help prevent flooding, what happens when habitats disappear, or how communities make decisions about land use. These conversations help kids connect what they’re learning to what’s happening right in their own backyard. Visit the Save Sledge Forest website to learn more and explore ways to get involved.
-
Hooheh Cultural Burn & Reforestation Program: In Bolton, NC, the Waccamaw Siouan Tribe is leading an effort to restore over 20 acres of tribal land by planting longleaf pine seedlings. Once the dominant tree of the Southeast, longleaf pine forests were nearly wiped out by deforestation and development, taking with them critical ecosystems and the traditional land practices that sustained them. This month, the Hooheh Cultural Burn & Reforestation Program will plant 400 seedlings at the Waccamaw Siouan Tribal Grounds, blending environmental restoration with Indigenous land stewardship. For our students, this is a powerful example of how tree planting is more than conservation—it’s about Indigenous land rights, cultural survival, and ecological resilience. To volunteer at their upcoming planting ceremony, sign up here.

Show the Earth Some Love This Valentine's Day
|
Make sure Cupid shows some love to Mother Nature too! Traditional Valentine’s Day items like flower bouquets, cards, mass-produced gifts, and packaged foods can add up to a lot of waste and environmental harm. Here are some ways to celebrate the day more sustainably:
|
-
Skip the flowers. Give a potted plant, or research starting a pollinator garden together instead.
- Keep it sweet with fair-trade chocolate.
- Be extra-thoughtful with a homemade card using recyclable or compostable materials.
- Shop for eco-conscious wrapping paper.
- Share a delicious (and local) meal.
