Senator Booker visits Hawthorne Ave Urban Farm
| |
Everyone loves fresh, healthy, and locally grown produce, including Senator Cory Booker!
Senator Booker, who, ten years ago, led a ribbon-cutting ceremony at our Hawthorne Ave Urban Farm, once again visited the 3-acre property. Many changes have taken place over those years--the orchard is fully grown, a school garden has been added, and over 250 raised beds are planted by local residents. Senator Booker browsed through the goods at our Youth Farm Stand and along with City Green, NJ, toured the farm and discussed the importance of food access and urban farming as well as the benefits of the Good Food Bucks program promoted by City Green, NJ (which can double your SNAP money!). Senator Booker was able to meet some of the volunteers, Plot it Fresh community gardeners, and staff who help our farm thrive.
Thank you to Senator Booker and his team for taking the time to visit us and learn more about what we do here at the Conservancy!

If you don't have the time to visit our Urban Farm or Youth Farm Stand, don't worry, you can still order fresh, locally-grown produce online below!

For Second Saturday Family Adventure this month, Ms. Sarah led participants through an exploration of the herbs growing at our Outdoor Learning Center!
At our Prince Street location, we have gardens full of different veggies, flowers, and herbs. Children explored the different plants growing in our gardens through a "herb safari" activity and discovered what makes a herb a herb, picked some fresh herbs for themselves, and created different products with them. The families picked parsley, thyme, lavender, rosemary, and mint which they used to create products like herbal bath bombs, salt scrubs, and sachets! They were also able to take plant cuttings and replant them to bring home.
Look out for next month's family adventure on September 11th!

Meet our new JVC and FoodCorps memebers
| |
It's that time of year again when brand new Jesuit Volunteers Corps and FoodCorps members join the Conservancy family. This year we're welcoming two new JVCs and four FoodCorps members; Liam, Katie June, Patrick, Gerson, Yaquanna, and Deja.
Both the JV Corps and FoodCorps programs are year-long service terms where applicants from all over the United States commit themselves to engaging, fostering growth, and providing resources to their host community to develop healthier, more just environments.
FoodCorps, an offshoot of AmeriCorps, is dedicated to creating best-in-class models for what healthy school food environments look like. Our FoodCorps members will be working with local Newark schools helping to develop their school gardens, nutrition and food education programs, and more!
The Jesuit Volunteer Corps, also an AmeriCorps affiliated program, aspires to create a more just and hopeful world by engaging young people in vital service work throughout communities around the US. Our JV members will be helping to grow our urban and community farming programs and our Youth Farm Stand.
Stay tuned for more information on all our JV and FoodCorps members!
