TDSB Opposes Ministry Proposal of Permanent Remote Learning
Various sources have recently reported that the provincial government is preparing to create a permanent, centralized, and revenue-generating online model for Ontario students. I am deeply concerned about the impact this could have on our entire system, and most of all, on our students.
Below please find a) some recent media coverage b) the leaked Ministry slide deck, c) the motion that my trustee colleagues and I recently passed expressing our opposition to this proposal and finally d) a template letter for consideration by your school council:
- CBC News article here.
- Ministry of Education presentation here.
- TDSB motion to "Stop the Plans for Radical Changes to Remote Learning in Ontario". The key points of this motion are as follows:
1) There is no evidence to support that this policy change will improve student achievement or well-being;
2) TDSB data shows that students and families prefer local in-person learning – which is the opposite of this proposal;
3) Rushing through radical changes to remote learning after a year of isolation and instability created by the COVID-19 pandemic risks causing real harm to our students; and
4) The government must immediately stop its consideration of this proposal until the full impacts of remote learning on students during this pandemic are known.
- Finally, please find attached a template letter should you wish to advocate to the province to stop their plan to radically change the delivery of remote learning. Please feel free to use it within your communities.
