Adolescent Overdose Prevention and SUD Treatment Initiative (R21 - Clinical Trial Not Allowed This notice of funding opportunity (NOFO) encourages exploratory and developmental research to better understand adolescent illicit fentanyl use and overdose patterns among adolescents at high risk for overdose (i.e., intentional, unintentional, fatal, and/or non-fatal). Research studies should identify targets for overdose prevention and substance use disorder (SUD) treatment and recovery. Research studies may use a variety of approaches (e.g., leveraging existing data sources, survey research, social network analysis, development of new methods, feasibility research). Outcomes of interest include, but are not limited to, prevalence of overdose and reduction in substance use, particularly fentanyl use or use of substances that are commonly laced with fentanyl; unintentional use/overdose, use/overdose by risk group, stigma, family and environmental risk and protective factors, treatment engagement, adolescents' perceptions of substance use, and optimistic bias. Research studies involving services delivery or interventions are encouraged to consider the companion NOFO, RFA-DA-25-031, Adolescent Overdose Prevention and SUD Treatment Initiative (R34 - Clinical Trial Optional).

Addressing the Impact of Structural Racism and Discrimination on Minority Health and Health Disparities (R01 - Clinical Trial Optional)
Research projects must address SRD in one or more NIH-designated populations with health disparities in the US and should address documented disparities in health outcomes. Applications are expected to provide a justification for why the specific types of SRD included constitute SRD, such as how the racism or discrimination is structural rather than reflecting individual-level behavior and how the SRD results in differential treatment or outcomes for less advantaged individuals, groups, or populations.

Systems-Level Risk Detection and Interventions to Reduce Suicide, Ideation, and Behaviors in Youth from Underserved Populations (R01 - Clinical Trial Optional)
This initiative is focused on testing systems-level interventions and strategies that reduce SIB and/or NSSI in these populations. Interventions and strategies should include coordination and collaboration within or across youth-serving systems and programs to facilitate risk identification, access to, and rapid engagement in quality treatment, services, and preventive interventions. Of particular interest are interventions and strategies that address culturally relevant factors that have been empirically associated with enhancing and protecting against SIB and/or NSSI risk in underserved youth. Research generating new information about factors causing/reducing disparities is strongly encouraged.

Addressing Health and Health Care Disparities among Sexual and Gender Minority Populations (R01 Clinical Trial Optional)
The purpose of this Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) is to support innovative observational and intervention-based research to identify and characterize the pathways and mechanisms through which health and health care disparities occur among sexual and gender minority populations of minoritized racial/ethnic and socio-economic statuses.

Health and Healthcare Disparities Among Persons Living with Disabilities (R01 Clinical Trial Optional)
The overarching goals of this funding opportunity are to support innovative research that focuses on the health (e.g., conditions, outcomes, trajectories, etc.) and healthcare (e.g., modalities systemic or structural factors, access/barriers, service delivery, care quality, utilization, etc.) of persons living with disabilities and the intersections with race and ethnicity, and SES. Research focused on intersections with sexual and gender minority self-identification, and living in underserved rural locations are also of interest.

Social Disconnection and Suicide Risk in Late Life (R01 Clinical Trial Optional)
The purpose of this Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) is to stimulate research to understand the link between social disconnection – including both objective social isolation as well as perceived social isolation (otherwise known as loneliness) – and suicidal thoughts and behaviors in late-life. For the purposes of this NOFO, social disconnection can be characterized by structural components (e.g., objectively few social relationships or infrequent social contact, whether driven by individual choice or societal forces), functional components (e.g., low or insufficient levels of social support and feelings of being excluded), and qualitative components (e.g., perceptions that relationships are of poor quality or are dissatisfying).

New York Community Trust: Serving Children with Disabilities and their Families
New York City is home to more than 250,000 children with disabilities. A complex system of public and private schools, public disability programs, and nonprofit services is intended to meet their needs. However, many parents—especially those with few resources or limited English proficiency—face obstacles navigating this system and securing the education their children need. Nonprofit organizations can help parents identify and secure quality education and support services, develop their advocacy skills, and connect with and learn from other parents. But small nonprofits, particularly those that serve specific immigrant communities or neighborhoods, often struggle to find the resources to meet the needs of their communities and retain staff, and also secure board members, develop and market new programs, streamline operating procedures, and manage cash flow.

New Equipment Capitalization Threshold
As a reminder from our presentation at the last Research Administrator Forum, effective September 1, 2021, NYU has a new equipment capitalization threshold of $5,000 to align with federal requirements prescribed in the Uniform Guidance regulations. This applies to the purchase and fabrication of equipment and furniture with a useful life of more than one year regardless of the source of funding. The primary reasons for the change are: (1) a significant reduction in both faculty and staff administrative burden and (2) to enhance the overall stewardship of the University’s assets by alleviating the requirement to perform a physical inventory of relatively low-valued items. We are collaborating across pre- and post-award to provide guidance to researchers, administrators, and fiscal officers on proposals and awards. The new rates will be applied to all new, renewal, and supplemental research and sponsored project awards with a start date on or after September 1, 2021. If you have any questions, please contact Joanne Goldstein, Assistant Controller, Costing & Analysis ( joanne.goldstein@nyu.edu).
