This week’s column is written by Nicole Berger, Elysian's art teacher. We are celebrating the children’s art at an art show currently on display at City Hall, through June. The work featured is primarily sixth grade work, and also some work completed in the seventh and eighth grade art seminar. Be sure to stop by!
Elysian Student Art Exhibition at City Hall
The Elysian Charter School Art Show featuring the sixth grade, along with the middle school Painting and Drawing Seminar, is being displayed at City Hall throughout the month of June. Throughout the first semester, sixth graders completed "The Sketchbook Project" where they were introduced to new artists, illustrators, techniques, materials, and concepts. Each student maintained a personal sketchbook practicing these concepts. At the beginning of the second semester, students met one-on-one with their art teacher to select two ideas that they wanted to develop into larger personal pieces. They worked for the remainder of the semester on developing their original ideas from sketches to final show pieces. They had in depth discussions about their artwork, eventually forming artist statements for each piece describing their design, construction, and thought process throughout.
The seminar students worked on various paintings and drawings throughout the semester. One of the most unconventional painting techniques that they explored this semester was "fluid painting." Students were inspired by watching artists using painting fluid and acrylic paint to create marble-like paintings. Students used gloss tempera paint on stretched canvases, pouring the paint and using tools, such as the handle of a paintbrush, to form swirls and designs within the paint.

ANNUAL END-OF-YEAR SURVEY
Every year we asked the parents to provide feedback on their experience as members of our Elysian Community. This is an opportunity for your voices to be heard as the Board of Trustees, the administration and the staff plan for next year. It is quick and easy to complete. The grade with the highest participation rate will receive a return to school treat in September. Please click on this link to complete the survey before the last day of school on June 23rd.

IT’S TIME TO RETURN THE GLOCKENSPIELS!!
Dear 4th, 5th and 6th Grade Parents,
I am so proud of the work that your children did this year and in the spring concert!! I hope you are too.
Now that we are almost at the end of the year, I am asking you to send back to school the glockenspiel that was loaned to your child at the beginning of the year. It is very important that I get all instruments back no later than June 21st. Please remember that all these instruments (almost 100 in total) must be cleaned and packed for the summer.
Please make sure that your child returns the instrument in its case, with all the regular keys on it (12 brightly colored keys), with all the note magnets (12), 4 mallets (two with black heads, two with pink heads) and the three chromatic keys (black metal keys: low F sharp (f#), low B flat (B ), and high F sharp. It is very important that all accessories come back with each instrument!!!
I will keep a record of your child’s name, date of return, and condition of the instrument. If your child’s instrument is seriously damaged, missing keys, or is not returned you will be billed accordingly.
If you have any questions or concerns, please let me know.
Sincerely,
Mary Guthrie
Music Teacher

We’re “all in” this together, and ELYSIAN NEEDS YOUR HELP!
3 days left to raise $21,605!
First, thank you to everyone who has donated so far!
But if you have not yet contributed, and are able to, please donate by Thurs., June 15. Every little bit makes a difference, and we can reach our goal of $125,000 with your help.
Funds raised this year go towards utilities like air-conditioning, which, on a day like this makes the difference for students, faculty and staff being able to have a productive day. We're also looking to fund a public address system, which is a vital security measure if a lockdown is ever needed.
Thank you very much for your support!
