If you could see God and tell him one thing, what would you say?

Psalm 112:1-4
Praise the Lord.
Blessed are those who fear the Lord,
who find great delight in his commands.
Their children will be mighty in the land;
the generation of the upright will be blessed.
Wealth and riches are in their houses,
    and their righteousness endures forever.
Even in darkness light dawns for the upright,
for those who are gracious and compassionate and righteous.

New International Version (NIV)
“You are paid up for a while,” said Jake who received my payment and tip for a shoeshine.  I was grateful for the new friendship.  Grateful for grace, I wanted to be generous.  As a once upon a time porter at an airport I remembered the unexpected generosity of others.

The psalmist shows us that the generous and just will not lack what they need.  Is this a guarantee of wealth?  Shall we give more so that God is obligated to give us more?

What does God owe us for what we have done for him?  Our recent study of the the older brother of the prodigal son reminded me that relationship with a God can become quid pro quo if we are not careful.

Paul makes it clear that God cannot be in our debt (Romans 11:33-36).  In view of the cross and resurrection God has given more than we merited.  God’s grace transforms our hearts in ways that make us generous.  Nor do we want to keep score with God.  We become channels of his grace to others.  They praise God because of our kindness.
Pray with me:
Father, thank you for your grace.  We can never pay you back.  Still we thank you for the chance to give to others today.  In Jesus’ name we live and pray.  Amen.
This year our Every Day with Jesus readings will follow The Bible Project Read Scripture Plan.  Copies of this reading plan are available at Tallowood Baptist Church, or download
the app at readscripture.org.  Read through the Bible with us in 2019!
Joyfully,
