Jeremiah 6:16-17
This is what the Lord says:“Stand at the crossroads and look;
    ask for the ancient paths,
ask where the good way is, and walk in it,
    and you will find rest for your souls.
    But you said, ‘We will not walk in it.’
 I appointed watchmen over you and said,
    ‘Listen to the sound of the trumpet!’
    But you said, ‘We will not listen.’

New International Version (NIV)
                I love old roads.  When in Rome, I asked them to take me outside the city to the Via Appia, the Appian Way.  There I stood and stared at the old, shiny, black rocks in the road, as the tour guide stared at me.  “What is it?” she asked curiously.  “The Apostle Paul walked this road into the city of Rome,” I answered.  Only days before I had joined some in our group as we walked on the Via Egnatia where Paul had stepped going into the city of Philippi.

               We are not the first to make this trip.  I know it may feel like somebody dropped you in a rain forest with a machete and told you to find your own way.  For those who want to walk in God’s ways, though, there are still ancient paths.  Jeremiah advised the people of his day to stare at the roads and ask, “Which is the way to what is good?”  Have you ever seen a road sign which says, “Goodness – 5 miles”?  Look in the scriptures.  Look at the lives of the disciples.  The signs are there.

               When we find the good road, we should definitely take it.  Why?  It leads to rest.  Jesus would quote this as he invited others to come to him in Matthew 11:28-29.  “You will find rest for your souls,” he promised.  The good road is the road that leads to Jesus.  Whatever else we do today, let us find that road and follow it home, to him and rest.  Otherwise like the people in Jeremiah’s day, we will just go our own way.  And we know by now the exhaustion of those who do not follow him.
Pray with me:
Father, thank you for the good road that leads to you.  If we have taken a detour, please bring us back to the road today.  If we have lost our way, point us toward your Son.  Let your goodness and love follow us all our lives long, and finally lead us home.  In Jesus’ name.
  This year we focus our Every Day with Jesus readings on Jesus’ story.  With references to Tallowood's Read Through the Bible in 2018 daily reading plan, let's focus our undivided attention on Jesus and follow where he lead. He will not fail. Neither will we!

Joyfully,
